About the station

The capital of the South Australian state, Adelaide is an unsung gem for travelers who want to experience this fascinating country outside of Melbourne and Sydney. With sprawling parks and wide tree-lined boulevards, Adelaide is as green a city as you’ll ever find. In fact, the city center is ringed with a series of lush parklands along with Adelaide Botanic Garden, one of the absolute best examples of its kind anywhere in the world.

Adelaide also showcases the cultural offerings that Australia has become known for, superb coffee shops and wine bars (with locally made wine from the region) are something locals take for granted, and the food scene rivals the larger Australian cities. For many travelers, Adelaide functions as a launching point for exploring the South Australian countryside. There is wonderful hiking in the Barossa Valley and Adelaide Hills, and visitors frequently take day trips out to the many vineyards in the hills.

The city’s key transportation hub is Adelaide Central Bus Station, which is located right in the middle of the city center on bustling Franklin Street. Adelaide Central Bus Station is where most of the regional, interstate, and local bus lines run through, and it’s frequently where Australians from nearby cities will travel through when visiting Adelaide or connecting to the airport or Adelaide Railway Station. It resembles a train station in that it features a series of bus stops while also offering an indoor facility offering amenities like waiting areas, restrooms, ATMs, and cafes. Here’s an Adelaide luggage storage guide and everything you need to know:

Are there lockers in the Adelaide Bus Station?

There are lockers available to rent at Adelaide Bus Station, but they can be quite expensive. There are small, medium, and large locker types, and each can be rented for up to 72 hours. Depending on the size of your belongings and the length of your stay, a locker rental can cost between $6 and $50. There are strict policies in place to manage the service, leaving little room for flexibility. Everything is automated, and credit cards can be used to reserve them onsite. Because of the location within the city center and most tourists being unsure where to store their bags, these frequently sell out, especially on weekends. Veteran travelers often avoid these lockers in favor of more flexible and reliable luggage storage services like Bounce.

Can I store luggage at Adelaide Airport?

Adelaide Airport does have luggage storage options onsite, but these can be inefficient if you’re trying to sightsee through the city on travel days. The lockers are located near the car rental kiosks and have very strict guidelines for how long you can use them. Overage fees can be incredibly costly, and there are highly limited customer support features offered.

Things to do near Adelaide Central Bus Station

Adelaide Central Market

One of the best places to grab a bite is within crawling distance from Adelaide Central Bus Station. This might explain all the roller bags and outfits geared toward long bus rides. This bustling place is part farmer’s market, part food court, with hundreds of local producers, delis, restaurants, and food trucks turning up to serve their wares. You’ll find the best artisanal cheeses and meats next to stellar Vietnamese street food. There’s a full bar showcasing Adelaide’s wonderful vineyards. If you’re with a group, it’s easily the best place to grab a bite based on the solid variety. Have dinner plans? The energetic atmosphere is worth checking out, even just for grabbing a cold brew and people-watching.

Adelaide Botanic Gardens

This city certainly enjoys its green spaces, especially in this sprawling park that features eight different gardens. Each space reflects a different climate. There’s a rainforest, wetlands, groves of eucalyptus, and even an area devoted to Australian deserts. One of the most interesting areas is the Garden of Health, which features plants that have healing properties. The Palm House is a great place to catch some humidity (Adelaide is very dry). There’s a children’s area where the little ones can roam around, along with a culinary garden where they can learn to plant their own fruits and vegetables. The Botanic Gardens are an integral part of daily life in Adelaide, so there are also spaces open to the public where you can have a picnic and relax. The Victorian architecture of the greenhouses and visitors center is also wonderful, with the main glasshouse being the largest conservatory in the southern hemisphere.

Adelaide Oval

One of the premier sports venues in the country, the Adelaide Oval is a stunning cricket stadium situated just north of the city center. You can catch a cricket match at this 53,000-seat stadium or simply take a guided tour of the grounds and visit its museum dedicated to Adelaide sporting legends. The Adelaide Oval also hosts Australian rules football matches and even concerts, so there's always something happening!

 Adelaide Oval bag policy

For security purposes, all bags or containers too large to be stored under a seat are prohibited. There aren’t any lockers or a cloakroom available, so patrons are advised not to bring any larger items to events at the Oval.

South Australian Museum

Most international travelers are lost when it comes to Australian history (outside of the infamous tales about prison colonies). But Australia’s fascinating natural history is worth exploring, especially if you enjoy massive whale skeletons and giant squid. This free museum also explores Aboriginal culture with thousands of artifacts and archaeological finds.

South Australian Museum bag policy

The cloakroom can accommodate smaller items and bulky bags or strollers, but these aren’t secure, so it’s not recommended that you bring luggage or any bags containing electronics or valuables. All larger items are prohibited inside the museum, and dragging them through the exhibits wouldn’t be enjoyable in any case. Finding a trusted place to store the bags like a Bounce luggage storage facility is recommended!

Art Gallery of South Australia

Adelaide’s premier art museum specializes entirely in Australian work. This might seem like a narrow view until you walk through these airy halls. Typical European-style paintings and statues from across the centuries are everywhere, but there are sections with Aboriginal artwork that really make this place special. Works from the distinctive Australian Impressionist movement are also prevalent, and 20th-century Modernist works from a diverse group of talented creators are a can't-miss.

Art Gallery of South Australia bag policy

All large items (described as large bags, backpacks, and umbrellas) are prohibited inside the gallery. The cloakroom is free, however, but it’s frequently overcrowded and without any security measures.

Airport travel from Adelaide Central Bus Station

Aside from a taxi or renting a car, the quickest way to get from Adelaide Airport (ADL) to the city center (and Central Bus Station) is by taking the #163 City Bus directly to the Central Bus Station stop C1 on Currie Street. The ride only costs $4 and takes less than half an hour. A taxi ride will still take about 20 minutes and cost between $50 and $60 excluding tips.

Getting around the city from Adelaide Central Bus Station

How to get to Adelaide Railway Station from Adelaide Central Bus Station

Most Aussies from the state of South Australia tend to travel into the city via regional buses. From there, it provides easy access to the city’s top attractions along with connections through the airport and buses. The train station is just about a 15-minute walk from the bus station, but you can get there quicker by taking the Adelaide Metro tram from the Victoria Square stop. All tram rides are free and run about every 15 minutes.

How to get to Adelaide Botanic Gardens from Adelaide Central Bus Station

Easily the best way to get from Adelaide Central Bus Station to the Botanic Gardens is to hop on the 174 bus. It's only a 20-minute ride and costs $4.

How to get from Adelaide Central Bus Station to Adelaide Oval

It only takes 15 minutes to get from the Franklin Street entrance of Adelaide Central Bus Station to the Oval. You can take the Adelaide Metro #254 Bus to the King William Road stop (about five stops away) and then walk up to the stadium entrance. It’s that simple.
