Bayeux was founded back in the first century BC by the Romans, who called it Augustodorum. At the time, Bayeux was an important city, and a Roman legion was stationed there to deal with coastal raids by pirates. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, Viking raids in the 9th century practically destroyed the town, but it was rebuilt in the 10th century.
Bayeux is inextricably linked with the Norman conquest of Britain. William the Conqueror set out from Normandy and conquered England in 1066. The Bayeux Tapestry, which commemorates the Battle of Hastings where the Normans finally defeated the English forces, was made in England but is kept in Bayeux and takes its name from the town.
Through the medieval period, Bayeux and the Normandy region as a whole repeatedly changed hands between the English and the French in the many wars and dynastic wrangling between the two countries. And Bayeux again became a center of conflict during the Second World War. It was the first city to be liberated in the Battle of Normandy, and French leader Charles de Gaulle made a major speech in the town. Bayeux was largely spared from destruction during the conflict, but it has become a center of Memorial to those who died in Europe's liberation.
Bayeux is a small town of less than 15,000 people, and tourism is an important driver of the local economy. Despite its small size, the town has had an outsized impact on world history. And beyond the historical attractions, you'll find a lively French town that is well worth exploring.
See the world's most famous work of embroidery, the Bayeux Tapestry. This huge tapestry tells the story of the Norman conquest of England and the battle of Hastings in 1066, and is a compelling 900-year-old record of a conflict that changed the course of history.
Visit the spiritual heart of Bayeux at Notre-Dame cathedral. This was the church that William the Conqueror himself prayed at. The thousand-year-old building was significantly redecorated in the 15th century to give it its Gothic look.
Enjoy an encounter with the natural world at Bayeux Botanical Gardens. Designated a historical monument of France, the Gardens date back to the 19th century and cover six acres. It's the perfect place to stretch your legs and breathe some fresh air.
Shop like a local at Bayeux Market. This is the best place to sample the local produce and pick up some unique souvenirs. Plus, it also allows you to see the livelier, more modern side of this ancient town.
Pay your respects at Bayeux War Cemetery. This is the largest cemetery in France dedicated to British and Commonwealth forces. In fact, the cemetery is officially part of Britain, gifted to the nation by France in recognition of the sacrifices made to liberate the country from Nazi occupation.
Trains from Paris to Cherbourg stop at Bayeux along the way. The train takes around two and a half hours to reach Bayeux.
Because of Bayeux’s popularity with tourists, a number of private tour buses also travel to the town. It can be easily reached from the nearby city of Caen or from Paris.
As a small town, Bayeux's public transit is somewhat lacking. But because the historic center of town is so small and all the attractions so close together, walking from the train or bus station into the heart of the city takes no more than ten minutes.
As a small town that punches well above its weight when it comes to historical importance, Bayeux is perfect to explore on foot. As well as seeing all the major sites, you’ll get to enjoy the unique atmosphere of this Normandy town.
Simplify your trip by dropping off any heavy bags at a luggage storage locker in Bayeux. Bounce can help you find a place to store your things, no matter how big your bags are or how long you need them secured. Drop off any unneeded possessions so you can explore this charming town to the fullest.
D-Day beach tour: Outside the town of Bayeux, a quick trip to the D-Day beaches will help you understand one of the most dramatic events in modern history. Gold Beach is the closest of the invasion beaches to Bayeux, but you can tour as many of the beaches as you want to and see where the tide was turned against the Nazis during World War II. The beaches' scenic calm is in sharp contrast to the remaining fortifications and bunkers that show the violent past of the region. Make sure to leave any heavy bags at a luggage storage shop in Bayeux before you visit.
Cider tour: Normandy is known for its apples, and where there's apples, there's cider. Explore the culture of the region with a Normandy cider tour. Visit a variety of orchards and try both apples and cider for yourself. You could also try Calvados, the apple brandy that takes its name from the region. You may well come away with a new appreciation for both the apple and the beverages it produces. But try not to overindulge; some of the ciders are surprisingly potent, and you don't want to ruin your trip with a hangover.
Caen: The nearby town of Caen is the closest city to Bayeux. Famous for its World War II memorial, its grand 11th century Abbey, and an imposing Norman Castle, Caen is also home to some great restaurants and is a wonderful place to explore. Make sure to drop off any heavy bags at a luggage storage shop in Bayeux to make your trip easier.

This was so cool!!!! Great service, extremely easy to use, and totally affordable! I didn't know where I'd leave my luggage while we explored San Fran, so I easily Googled luggage storage and found this company. At first it was a little odd dropping my bag off at a chocolate store, but the lady at the register was able to immediately pull up my reservation without any problems and then she put a lock on my suitcase and gave me a card to get it back with. She pushed the bag to the back of their storage room and I came back about 6 hours later to pick it up. Great service, I will definitely be using this again when I travel!
