About Alexanderplatz
Berlin is full of squares, parks, and public spaces. Partly, that's because up until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, this was two cities with two very different ideologies. Alexanderplatz is the largest square in Berlin and is the center of what used to be East Berlin.
The Russian Czar Alexander I visited Berlin in 1805, and it's for him that the square is named. Although Alexanderplatz started out as a military parade ground and the location of a produce market, it became a major transport hub in 1882 as Berlin began to build its extensive railway system.
Like the rest of Berlin, Alexanderplatz suffered horrendous damage during the Second World War. Reconstruction began in the 1960s, and the rebuilt square was finally completed in 1971. As pressure grew to end Soviet rule and unify the city and the country, Alexanderplatz was the scene of peaceful protests in the late '80s. Finally, in 1989, the Wall came down, and Alexanderplatz, along with the rest of East Berlin, rejoined the western portion of the city.
Since then, Alexanderplatz has become a hub not only for transportation around the city, but also for shopping, dining, entertainment, and nightlife. To this day, Berlin is always changing, and Alexanderplatz is a prime example of that restless energy the city is known for.
Things to do near Alexanderplatz
As the former heart of East Berlin, Alexanderplatz has plenty of attractions to keep visitors occupied. Not only is this a great place to begin when exploring the city, but you may find there's enough in and around this colossal square to keep you occupied for a day or more. In the square and its surrounding area, you'll find things to do like:
- See the city from above at the iconic TV tower. At 368 m/1207 feet tall, the Berlin TV Tower, or Fernsehturm, dominates the skyline of the city. Opened in 1969, this former symbol of East German technological prowess now has an observation deck that offers unrivaled views over Berlin.
- Find some tranquility at Berlin Cathedral. Formerly the church of the German monarchy, this imposing cathedral now serves the entire city as its premier place of worship. Founded in the 19th century, restoration of the church following the War wasn't completed until 1993.
- Soak up the opulence at Berlin City Hall. Also known as the Rotes Rathaus, Berlin City Hall is an imposing red brick structure with a famous clock tower. Inside, the elaborately decorated rooms are a testament to the importance of the city, and exhibitions are often held explaining more about the history of the building and the city.
- Immerse yourself in culture at Museum Island. Home to five different museums, Berlin's famous Museum Island is devoted to the history not only of Germany but of many other cultures around the world.
- Shop 'til you drop on Unter den Linden. This broad boulevard leads from the Brandenburg Gate to Berlin Cathedral, and many of the city's most famous landmarks are along this avenue. It's also a great place to spend some money, with its wealth of luxury stores, cafés, and restaurants.
Transit options in Alexanderplatz
- Berlin Alexanderplatz Bahnhof is a stop for the S-Bahn, the railway that circles the city. Lines HBX, RB14, RE1, RE2, and RE7 all stop at this busy station.
- U-Bahnhof Klosterstrasse sits at the southern end of the square close to the Rathaus and is served by subway lines U and U2.
- Alexanderplatz is also a major tram stop served by lines M1, M4, M5, and M6.
Luggage storage at Alexanderplatz
Berlin's history as a divided city means it doesn't really have a single central district. But if anywhere could make that claim, it would be Alexanderplatz and the surrounding area. This busy square receives more than 360,000 visitors every day, making it one of the most visited locations in Berlin.
It's no place to carry heavy bags around with you. Luckily, Bounce offers plenty of luggage storage locations in the area that can accommodate any size of bags for long as you like. And because of its excellent transit links, Alexanderplatz is the perfect place to leave your bags and pick them up later.
Attractions and activities near Alexanderplatz
- The Brandenburg gate: This triumphal arch may be Berlin’s most iconic landmark. Built to celebrate German war victories in the 19th century, it became part of the division between East and West after the War. This iconic monument has witnessed some of the most major events in history, and it's a must-visit while you're in Berlin — if only to get that ever-important selfie.
- The Berlin wall: Although this massive structure was torn down in 1989, segments still remain. One of the best sections to visit is the Eastside gallery, where the remaining section of Wall has become a gallery for street art. Easily reached from Alexanderplatz on the S-Bahn, you can leave your bags at a Bounce luggage storage location and take a short trip out to see this fascinating gallery. It's inspiring to see the art that can be created on what was once a symbol of division, and it's also the perfect place for some street photography.
- The Reichstag: Germany has been ruled from the Reichstag since 1894 - with some important interruptions. Damaged in an arson attack by the Nazis in the 1930s and further damaged during the war, the building has been restored and is the home of the current German parliament. On a visit to the building, you can see graffiti left behind by the Russian soldiers who occupied Berlin in 1945. The iconic dome and roof terrace can be visited by special appointment. Security at this location is understandably high, so leave your bags at an Alexanderplatz luggage storage in Berlin before visiting this fascinating building.
