Things to do in and around St Andrews

Before St Andrews was ever associated with golf, even before it became the university town that it has been for centuries, it was home to the largest church in Scotland. Such a history inevitably leaves traces that exist for centuries.

• Scan the city from the Ruler's Tower. This ancient tower is located in the grounds of St Andrews Cathedral but predates it, and originally served as the church of the priory. As the tallest tower in Saint Andrews, it affords great views of the city and a visit can be combined with a tour of the cathedral. The spiral stone staircase that you now use to ascend this tower replaced the ladders that were once used between the wooden floors. 
• How can we not mention golf? There are seven courses around the town totaling 300 hectares. Interestingly, none of them is called St Andrews. The most famous traditional golf course is The Old Course where they have been playing this game for 600 years. Today it remains a public golf course. The other famous course is The Castle with 90 hectares of grounds and very demanding play along the cliff tops. It has challenged both Open winners and US Presidents. Most of the St Andrews courses have a yearlong waiting list for those players wishing to hit a few balls.
• Test the hard stuff. St Andrews is in a country that prides itself on its whiskey and the town boasts three distilleries offering guided tours. Just in case you are not a whiskey fan, they all also offer gin tasting and on-site beer breweries.
• Feel the history by taking a stroll around St Andrews Castle.  Here you can make your own way around this ruined cliffside castle or join a tour where you will be given deeper insight into some of its dark past. It was home to kings, bishops, and unfortunate prisoners. The bottle dungeon was seven meters deep and prisoners would be lowered in on a rope to complete their harsh sentences. During the war of independence, it was destroyed several times as it changed from Scots to English hands and back again on numerous occasions.
• Scotland will always be famous for its haggis and there are several restaurants here where you can sample this iconic Scots addition to the world of cuisine. Traditionally cooked in the stomach of a sheep, this dish is made up of minced offal combined with onion, oatmeal, and spices. While it may not sound particularly appetizing, it is surprisingly tasty and you can't leave Scotland without trying it.

• At just an hour away, Edinburgh International Airport is an easy journey for the air traveler. Shuttle buses will carry you to St Andrews in under thirty minutes and they run twenty-four hours a day.
• Leuchars Station is the nearest rail station to St Andrews and it is six miles away. There is plenty of taxi access from there.
• In the town itself, the local bus system is very efficient and the bus station is in the middle of town. Stagecoach 99A circles the town on a regular basis.

• The British Golf Museum: OK, so I couldn't get away without mentioning this one. Here is undoubtedly the most famous place to learn all about the history of this game, along with the backstories of many of its most famous proponents. Housing over 17 000 objects, this museum will be intriguing, even for those who aren't ardent fans of the game.
• The Wardlaw Museum: It would be an error to assume that it is only golf that has molded this town into what it is today. The university has a proud and illustrious history that dates back to the 1400s and even today, students outnumber the general population by quite some margin during the term period. This museum celebrates this history and will also inspire any younger members of your traveling party.
• Fife pilgrim way: You may not have time to do all of it, but this 64-mile hike follows the pilgrim route that has been walked for centuries. Fife was one of the many destinations for pilgrims during the 11th to 16th centuries, and for 400 years St Andrews was one of the main pilgrim destinations in Medieval Europe.  Pilgrims from all over the Christian world would walk here for the chance to get near to holy relics, supposedly of one of Jesus's disciples.
