More about Hagen

About Hagen

With a population around 190,000, Hagen doesn't even make it into the top 40 German cities by population. However, it is home to the country's largest university. The 67,000 students who study at FernUniversitat Hagen would make up a massive portion of the population if it wasn't for the fact that the University is dedicated to distance learning.

Hagen doesn't enter the historical record until the year 1200, when it was little more than a single farm. As a rural town, it grew slowly over the years, far away from the great forces of history that saw it pass from one ruler to another.

However, when Germany began to industrialize in the 19th century, Hagen started to grow more rapidly. Located close to the coal mining and steel producing area of the Ruhr, Hagen became a center of heavy industry. Its working population also became involved in the tumultuous politics of early 20th-century Germany, with thousands of workers going on strike during the Ruhr Uprising of 1920. This industrial importance led to the city being heavily bombed by Allied forces during World War II.

These days, Hagen retains its character as a working town. However, the rolling hills of the Westphalia region make the countryside around Hagen a great place to explore.

Things to do in Hagen

Slowly but surely, Hagen is embracing its potential as a destination for tourism. Visiting this town is a way to experience authentic German life. And the countryside surroundings and proximity to the major city of Dortmund make Hagen a tempting place to discover.

  • Step back in time at the Hagen Open Air Museum. This reconstructed old town explores the ancient crafts once practiced in Hagen prior to the Industrial Revolution. The old buildings will make you feel as though you've been transported back to the 18th century. If you visit in December, don't miss the enchanting Christmas market held here.

  • Peer into the distant past at Wasserschloss Werdringen. This 13th-century castle has been converted into a museum of prehistory. Stone Age tools, the remains of people who inhabited the area 11,000 years ago, and even an impressive wooly mammoth fill the fascinating galleries of this museum.

  • Enjoy the view from Kaiser Friedrich Turm. Located at the highest point in the city, the stone tower dates back to 1911, when it replaced an earlier wooden tower that was struck by lightning. The tower gives a great view over the city and is the perfect place to get your bearings.

  • Sample a local delicacy at the Zwieback Museum. This crunchy baked good is similar to an Italian biscotti, and is best enjoyed with jam. The quirky museum explains the history of this classic regional treat, and the attached bistro lets you try it for yourself.

  • Explore the historical center of Hagen. Home to the city museum and the municipal archives, the historical center administrates many of the city's ancient sites and is the perfect place to get a better grip on the history of Hagen.
