About Waikiki

Waikiki, situated on the south shore of Honolulu, is a world-renowned neighborhood. It was first introduced to the world in 1901 after the completion of its first hotel, the Moana Surfrider. Waikiki, which means “spouting waters” in Hawaiian, once served as a playground for the royalty of Hawaii. Over the years up until today, it’s become one of the most sought-after holiday destinations and a bustling social venue for tourists from all over the world.

Despite its size (encompassing only 1.5 square miles), Waikiki draws millions of visitors every year. If there’s one thing that Waikiki is most famous for, it’s the picturesque beaches. With beautiful, crystal-clear blue water and the lush Mount Leahi as a backdrop, the beaches in this neighborhood are indeed unlike any other.

That being said, there’s more to Waikiki than just its shores; the community is filled with opportunities for fun, such as shopping, dining, water sports, and more. Whether you’re a Hawaiian local or a tourist, consider using our luggage storage service during your trip. We offer plenty of convenient locations for baggage storage near Waikiki so you can explore and enjoy the sandy shores without the hassle of your bags.

Top things to do in Waikiki

The Honolulu neighborhood of Waikiki has been a vacation destination for hundreds of years. In fact, during the 1800s, Hawaiian royalty used to visit and spend their time here. While the white sand beaches make Waikiki the world-class spot it currently is, numerous other places and activities are worth checking out. See all that Waikiki offers with Bounce’s list of top things to do.

Activities and attractions in Waikiki

Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is the neighborhood’s most visited attraction, where guests can sunbathe, swim, and simply enjoy the beach. Divided into eight different sections, there’s plenty to see and do at Waikiki Beach. While here, take advantage of all the main activities and water sports locals in Waikiki enjoy. Surfing is a popular activity for Hawaiians, and there’s no better place to do it than in Waikiki. Surfing instructors and surfboard rentals are available on the majority of the beaches in the neighborhood.

USS Arizona Memorial Park

Stationed in Pearl Harbor, the USS Arizona Memorial Park honors the fallen soldiers of the infamous bombing by the Japanese fleet. The facility houses some artifacts from WWII and explains the events that led to the fateful attack. By visiting the Arizona Memorial, you can see the resting point of over 1,000 sailors and marines who were killed on the ship during the attack.

USS Arizona Memorial Park bag policy

While visiting the USS Arizona, it’s important to note that you can’t bring your bags on board with you. There’s a luggage storage space available on site for a fee, or alternatively, you can store your luggage with us instead. You’ll find that our storage spaces are more affordable, and once you find a convenient location, you can leave your things with us for as long as you need.

Iolani Palace

Located on South King Street, the Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in the United States. Formerly, this stunning building served as the residence for Hawaiian royalty and dates back to 1879. Today, it’s a tourist attraction that gives a glimpse into the life of former monarchs. Inside, you’ll see ornately decorated rooms and staircases, as well as displays with jewelry and other items.

Iolani Palace bag policy

Planning your visit to Iolani Palace? Be sure to find a Waikiki baggage storage spot to stop by on the way since they don’t permit luggage, large bags, or backpacks inside. We’re unsure if they offer storage lockers on site. But there’s no need to worry; you can find a safe place to leave your things within walking distance on Bounce’s luggage storage app.

Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve

Found along Hanauma Bay Road, this bay is the best spot in Hawaii for snorkeling. It’s not like any other beach in Honolulu; it’s a protected area dedicated to preserving marine life, allowing you to see incredible wildlife and natural habitats. Other parts of Hanauma Bay have suffered from over-tourism, so it’s important to respect the area's nature.

US Army Museum of Hawaii

This small military museum, located inside Fort DeRussy Military Reservation, houses a variety of weapons, uniforms, and artifacts from different war periods. The building was a coastal artillery battery until 1976, when it became a museum.

US Army Museum of Hawaii bag policy

This museum often allows guests to bring backpacks inside, but it doesn’t have storage lockers or facilities. You won’t want to worry about dragging your oversized baggage through the exhibits, which is why you should store luggage with us. Using our luggage storage app, the entire booking process takes only minutes.

Sea Life Park Hawaii

This marine life park, aquarium, and bird sanctuary in Waimanalo lets visitors get up close and personal with different species of animals. It houses a 300,000-gallon tank where sea lions and dolphins put on acrobatic shows, as well as other exhibits with sharks, turtles, tropical fish, and more.

Bishop Museum

Located just west of town in the Kalihi district, this museum preserves and displays historical artworks from ancient Hawaiians, such as royal heirlooms and Polynesian artifacts. It was established by Charles Reed Bishop in 1889 in honor of Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, his late wife.

Bishop Museum bag policy

You’ll need to store your luggage prior to visiting this museum since they don’t allow travel luggage or backpacks weighing over 20 pounds inside. You can store your bags in the museum for a fee or leave them in a safe, secure store or local business that partners with Bounce.

National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific

This cemetery, more commonly known as Punchbowl Cemetery (because of its location inside the Punchbowl Crater), was built in 1948 as a final resting place for American soldiers who died during WWII. Today, it acts as a cemetery and a memorial for all those who lost their lives as a result of the war.

The restaurant is located on the eighth floor and is open to the outdoors, so you can take in breathtaking city and ocean views as you dine. Transit Options in Waikiki

Getting around a new city can be confusing, but several convenient public transit services make navigating around Waikiki a breeze. Take a look at the options listed below.

The public buses in Waikiki are run by TheBus and offer a reliable and convenient way of getting around. The fare for a single ticket is about $2.75.

Trolleys are useful since they go to places the buses can’t, like trailheads or hikes such as the popular Diamond Head Crater. The trolley has 4 lines, each going to 3 popular tourist areas, so you can choose the best route. The trolley follows a hop-on, hop-off schedule, so you can pay once and take your time at each of the stops. Depending on which route you choose, a daily ticket costs $31.50, $19.00, or $5.50.

Waikiki isn’t a very big place, and renting a bike is always a good option for tourists who don’t want to walk. Throughout Honolulu, there’s a bike-sharing service that has close to 1,300 bikes and 130 stands to pick them up and drop them off. Fares start at $4.00, and you can rent one for up to 5 hours at a time.

If you have a late flight leaving Honolulu or a late check in to your hotel, you may find it easier to grab a taxi. The basic price starts at about $3.10, and you’ll be charged an additional $2.25 per kilometer traveled.
