About the station

Portugal’s capital has quickly become a top-tier travel destination in Europe. While it was once a niche spot only the most avid globetrotters reached, it’s now a go-to trip for foodies, surfers, and history buffs.

With the Atlantic Ocean providing ample waves, surfers flock to Lisbon for the many coastal towns that provide excellent conditions and friendly vibes. Portuguese cuisine, especially its seafood and wine, attracts adventurous eaters and drinkers to Lisbon’s traditional tavernas and eateries. Lisbon’s historic city center is mostly intact, with Alfama’s cobbled streets and alleys lined with quaint shops and cafes.

One of the primary ways international travelers reach Lisbon is by taking the train into Gare do Oriente, which is one of the city’s primary transportation hubs for long-distance trains. It was built for the 1998 World Exposition, and its modern architecture is widely regarded as one of Europe’s best, with a striking arched roof that makes it impossible to miss. It’s situated in the Parque das Nações district just outside the city center, but it’s well-connected to the rest of the city. There are connections to the rest of Lisbon via the Metro, buses, and regional trains. Here’s everything you need to know about Lisbon’s Oriente Station:

Are there luggage lockers at Lisbon Oriente station?

There are fairly limited luggage storage options at Oriente Train Station, with coin-operated lockers situated in the main hall that can be rented for a few hours or even a full day. It should be noted that these are fairly small, being able to only accommodate a carry-on-sized bag. If you need to store larger luggage or specialty items like surfing gear, you’ll need to find other arrangements. Storing luggage with Bounce is a great option as we can store luggage for as long as you need and large items are not an issue.

Can you store your luggage at Lisbon Airport?

The options for luggage storage Lisbon Airport has are fairly basic, with a locker area that can be rented per day for a few dollars. Here are the measurement layouts for different locker sizes:

  • Small: 14.17” x 18.90” x 35.43”
  • Medium: 14.17” x 25.59” x 35.43”
  • Large: 14.17” x 38.98” x 35.43”
  • Extra Large: 28.35” x 38.98” x 35.43”
  • Surfing gear: 14.17” x 78.74” x 35.43”

The lockers are situated in each terminal and can be found near the information desk. You can pay with a credit card or cash, but there are some limitations in terms of checking on your bags and accessing them from the city center (Oriente Station is easy to get to, but takes some time). These lockers aren't a terrible option for a layover in Lisbon.

Where can you store luggage in Lisbon city center?

Some Lisbon hotels will take your bags for a few hours. Even before check-in, this might not be convenient if you’re trying to sightsee as soon as you get to Lisbon. While there are plenty of Lisbon luggage storage lockers throughout the city, including train stations, museums, and transit facilities, your best bet would be a proper left luggage service

What’s the best luggage storage service in Lisbon?

Of the most convenient luggage storage options, the best service has to be Bounce. With dozens of luggage storage facilities throughout Lisbon and an easy-to-use mobile app with a search function and access to 24/7 customer support, Bounce provides convenience and reliability you won't get from luggage lockers at a train station. Bounce partners in local shops and businesses to provide the most convenient locations along with a local touch. You’ll be dealing with a helpful attendant who knows the area and can provide travel tips. If you're planning ahead, you can either book luggage storage online or with the handy Bounce mobile app as well.

Things to do near Oriente Station

Oceanário de Lisboa

Easily, the most popular attraction near Oriente Station, this aquarium provides a surreal experience resembling scuba diving through underwater habitats. The Oceonàrio de Lisboa houses over 8000 marine specimens across hundreds of species and contains a staggering, two million gallons of water.

These tanks are absolutely massive with wrap-around tanks that you can walk through to provide an otherworldly experience. You'll catch glimpses of manta rays and zebra sharks up close, and the Oceonàrio houses some truly rare creatures like the majestic filigree sea dragons, ocean sunfish, Portuguese sardines, and rare species of jellyfish.

There are some pretty entertaining critters on display as well. Fuzzy sea otters and Magellan penguins on ice provide some levity in between the awestruck moments.

Oceanário de Lisboa bag policy

The bag policy prohibits all large items and luggage, but they do offer convenient lockers on the first floor of the Sea Building. You'll need to get a one euro coin to access each locker, and these units will fit all personal items and backpacks. If you have larger suitcases or a duffel, you'll definitely want to seek out more flexible luggage storage options like a service.

Castelo de São Jorge

Perched atop, a steep hill in the scent of Lisbon, it's impossible to miss this 11th-century fortress. It'll be even more difficult to pry your eyes away from the ramparts when you're at the base of the hill and this seemingly unreachable fortress towers above you.

While it may appear to be impenetrable, you can actually tour the castle's interior, and even its rampart for a few euros. The tours are offered in English and you'll get to learn about the history of the fortress, why it was built, and the battles it was involved in (spoiler: from the Visigoths to the Moors, it’s seen some action).

Explore the Alfama district

Unless you’re making the trip to hit the beach towns for some surfing, your first stop in Lisbon is this delightful neighborhood. With impeccably preserved brick buildings and cobbled streets, the hilly Alfama is made up of a cobbled maze lined with shops and cafés.

Since its 5th-century founding, Alfama has seen a wide range of architectural influences, including the Visigoths, Romans, and Moors. It’s the perfect introduction to traditional Portuguese culture, as it's been largely unchanged over the decades, and the international brands have yet to penetrate the city’s fierce loyalty to its authentic local businesses.

Airport travel from Oriente Station

Easily the most convenient way to get from the airport to Oriente Station is the Lisbon Metro’s Red Line (or ‘Linha Vermelha’). It runs directly from the airport to Oriente Station throughout the day, and the trip only takes about 10 minutes and costs less than $3.

You can also take a 10-minute taxi ride from the arrivals terminal for about $15-$20, which is really affordable when compared to other European cities. If you're heading into the city center, it might not make as much sense because of traffic. You can also take the Uber or Bolt rideshare services, which are comparable in price and commute time. There's a bus route that runs from the airport to Oriente Station, but it really doesn't make sense compared to the metro.

Getting around the city from Oriente Station

How to get to Castelo de São Jorge from Oriente Station

Oriente Station is well-connected via the metro to the rest of Lisbon, and you can take the Red Line directly or indirectly to almost every major landmark. To get to Castelo de São Jorge, you'll have to transfer to the Green Line at Alameda Station. Board the train heading to Cais do Sodré and then get off at Baixa-Chiado station. It’s about a 15-minute walk (uphill, but that’s unavoidable) to Castelo de São Jorge. This route takes between 30-40 minutes. If you don't want to walk uphill, you can take a $15 taxi or rideshare and get there in about 20 minutes.

How to get to Parque Eduardo VII from Oriente Station

If you want to stretch your legs after a flight or long train ride, it’s easy to get to Parque Eduardo VII, which is Lisbon’s largest and most famous public park. It’s right near the city center, and you can take the Red Line metro train from Oriente Station to São Sebastião Station. The park will be only a 15-minute walk from the metro station, and you’ll get there in about 30 minutes from Oriente Station. The train only costs about $2.
