About Lucca Train Station

Lucca is famous for its impressive walls. Having spent much of its long history as an independent city-state, Lucca needed its strong defenses. And for many years, no construction was allowed outside the walls of the city. The result has been that much of Lucca's attractions are still inside these Renaissance-era walls.

However, Luccas train station dates back to a more modern era of the city's development. As a result, the station lies just outside the walls in Piazza Ricasoli. Fortunately, the walled part of the city is not large, and can be easily accessed via Porto San Pietro. All the attractions of the walled city are a short walk from the station.

Lucca's train station was opened in 1846. This makes it older than the country of Italy. The double row of arches that give the station its form date back to this period. The station has six tracks that connect to Pisa, Florence, and other towns in the region. All of the trains that stop at Lucca station are regional trains. To access Italy's network of high-speed trains, the Frecciarossa, you'll need to go to Pisa.
