About the Ferry Building

Located on the Embarcadero, the San Francisco Ferry Building offers artisan food and drinks as well as an assortment of of small shops purveying local culture and cuisine. Designed by A. Page Brown in the Beaux Arts style, the Ferry Building started operations in 1898. One of San Francisco’s most famous landmarks, before becoming the bustling marketplace its now known for, it once served as the primary port of the city for over 100 years. In March 2003, the Ferry Building Marketplace opened to the public, and is now a popular tourist destination, and frequently sees many locals both regularly and during its weekly farmers market.

Fun fact: The Ferry Building’s iconic 245-foot-tall clock tower was modeled after the Giralda bell tower in Seville, Spain.
