About Singapore Zoo

Singapore Zoo, located within the lush Mandai rainforest, has been one of the city-state's premier attractions since its opening in 1973. This world-renowned rainforest zoo spans 26 hectares and is home to over 2,800 animals from over 300 species, including many rare and endangered ones.

What sets Singapore Zoo apart is its commitment to naturalistic habitats, offering visitors a glimpse into the lives of animals in environments that closely mimic their natural settings. The zoo's open enclosure design allows guests to observe animals roaming freely in spacious surroundings, separated from visitors by hidden barriers, moats, or glass panels. This innovative approach not only enhances the welfare of the animals but also enriches the visitor experience, making it a popular destination for families, animal lovers, and conservationists. Its emphasis on education, conservation, and a high level of visitor interaction through up-close animal encounters, feeding sessions, and shows, further cements Singapore Zoo's status as one of the world's best rainforest zoos.

Singapore Zoo bag policy

Large bags are not allowed inside the zoo, but you will find luggage storage facilities on site. At the River Wonders Entrance Plaza, there are self-service luggage lockers that can store luggage up to 60.5H X 43L X 35.5W cm in size. This can be a handy luggage storage option when visiting Singapore Zoo, but if you have baggage bigger than that, you'll need to find somewhere else to store them. Additionally, you should be aware that these traditional luggage lockers often fill up during busy times, making it essential to find nearby luggage storage options that can store your luggage for as long as you need.

How many hours do you need to see the Singapore Zoo?

How long you spend at the zoo is going to depend on what you are most interested in seeing and how much you love animals, but expect to spend at least two to four hours exploring everything here. Note that the zoo also puts on shows and animal feedings, so you may want to time your visit to coincide with these events.

How to get to Singapore Zoo

The zoo lies outside the city center, so depending on where you're coming from, you may need to make a few transfers to get there.

For example, from the airport, you'll need to take the subway to Tanah Merah station and then transfer to Paya Lebar. From there, you'll need to head to Bishan, then Khatib, and finally take a bus from Khatib MRT Station to the zoo itself. If you time your transfers right, this journey should only take a little over an hour.

On the other hand, if you're coming from somewhere more central like Marina Bay Sands, the zoo is much easier to reach. Take the bus from the Suntec City stop close to the City Hall and the National Gallery, and it will take you straight to the River Wonders entrance of the zoo. The bus is even called the Safari Line, so you can't go wrong.

Singapore Zoo also has its own taxi stand. If you don't feel like navigating public transport in this bustling city, you can save yourself some hassle by taking a taxi or using a ridesharing service to get there.

The park's boat rides, such as the Amazon River Quest, offer close encounters with animals from the Mississippi, Congo, Nile, Ganges, Mekong, and Yangtze rivers. River Safari’s focus on freshwater ecosystems and their conservation efforts provide a compelling reason for its visit, offering insights into the importance of river habitats and the challenges they face.

Again, this attraction is right next to the zoo itself, so the easiest way to get there is on foot.

Singapore Botanic Gardens

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is a lush, verdant oasis that spans 82 hectares and is located a short drive from Singapore Zoo. Established in 1859, it is the country's first and only tropical botanic garden on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

The gardens have a rich collection of more than 10,000 types of plants, including the National Orchid Garden with its stunning display of over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids. The gardens also feature scenic lakes, unique sculptures, and thematic gardens such as the Evolution Garden, which traces the history of plant life. The Singapore Botanic Gardens serves as a green lung in the city and a place of botanical and horticultural research, offering a tranquil retreat for nature lovers and a picturesque venue for recreational activities. Its historical significance and rich biodiversity make it an essential visit for those interested in the natural world.

How to get to Singapore Botanic Gardens

Take the Mandai Khatib shuttle bus to Khatib station, then hop on the Metro. You'll need to get off at Bishan station and transfer to the Circle Line, which will bring you to the Botanic Gardens. All in all, you can expect the journey to take you around one hour.

Marina Bay Sands, an iconic landmark located in the heart of Singapore's bustling Marina Bay, is a premier destination for both tourists and locals alike. This architectural marvel, designed by the renowned architect Moshe Safdie, opened its doors in 2010 and quickly became one of the most recognized and photographed buildings in the world.

The complex comprises three towering hotel skyscrapers capped by the spectacular Sands SkyPark, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline and the South China Sea. The SkyPark, a marvel of engineering, boasts a 150-meter infinity swimming pool, gardens, restaurants, and the SkyPark observation deck seemingly suspended in the sky.

Beyond its architectural feats, Marina Bay Sands is a vibrant hub of entertainment and luxury. The complex houses a vast shopping mall with a canal running through it, the ArtScience Museum with its lotus-inspired design, and a world-class casino.
