About Ikebukuro

Ikebukuro district is known for its entertainment and shopping. These highlights and more are centered around the business hub of Ikebukuro Station in Toshima, Tokyo. It is one of the busiest stations in the world, with almost three million passengers a year. It is also one of the oldest, opening in 1903. What makes this station even more popular is that each side has its own department store, with Tobu on the northwest and Seibu on the southeast.

Besides the two department stores at the station, you will have no problem finding places to shop nearby in the Ikebukuro district. The Parco Shopping Mall is less than a half-mile away, as is the Ikebukuro Shopping Park. Both of these malls have dozens of shops selling big brands as well as local items. After you work up an appetite with all that shopping, you can stop in at one of the many eateries.

Din Tai Fung Tobu is a great local restaurant across from the station to the west. Or head over to Yong Xiang Sheng Jian Guan just to the northwest for some fried dumplings. For a nice sit-down meal, head to the Saigon Restaurant on Meiji-Dori Avenue. Or try the whimsical Kamen Rider Diner on Mizuki Dori less than a half-mile away. Their superhero-themed décor is unique, the people are friendly, and the food is fantastic.

Fun Fact: Ikebukuro was the setting of the anime Durarara and many other Japanese anime dramas and games.

Luggage Storage Near Rikugien Gardens

The Rikugien Gardens on Hon-Komagome is only 16 minutes away. This ancient garden was built in the early 1700s for the fifth Shogun, Tsunayoshi Tokugawa. The name refers to the six elements of poetry and was built with 88 miniature scenes from well-known Japanese poetry. However, only 32 of these remain today. The gardens are built around a large pond surrounded by hills and mounds of greenery. If you take a self-guided tour of the whole garden, it will take about an hour. You can stop at any of the public teahouses along the way for a snack and some tea. See Kibushi, Enoki, Satsuki, Mizuki, Yamabuki, and Azalea, as well as the popular weeping cherry trees. With over 945,000 square feet to explore and enjoy, you will want to grab your camera out of your luggage before leaving it with one of our Bounce partners.

Luggage Storage Near the Chidorigafuchi Green Way

Less than 20 minutes from Ikebukuro on Kudan Minami, the Chidorigafuchi Green Way is almost 3,000 feet of green space to enjoy. Another favorite spot for locals to admire the weeping cherry blossoms, the greenway has a moat that flows right between them. Just northwest of the Imperial Palace, you can stroll or boat along the half-mile tunnel of beautiful pink blossoms. In fact, the gardens were part of the Imperial Palace grounds until 1949. You can rent one of the pastel-colored rowboats from March until November and get some fantastic selfies with the cherry blossoms in the background. During the Chiyoda Sakura Festival from March through April, the trees are lit up at night for a special view from the water. Make sure you drop off your belongings with one of our Bounce affiliates on your way for safekeeping.

Luggage Storage Near the Hachiko Square

Hachiko Square, in the middle of the city on Dougen-Zaka Street, was named after one of the most faithful dogs in the world, Hachiko. The famous Akita-Inu waited at the train station daily for his owner, even after his master died at work. Hachiko came back day after day, looking for his master for nine years until he passed away. The plaza is built around a statue of Hachiko and boasts dozens of retail shops, kiosks, and markets as well as restaurants and cafés. The Jinan District section has unique shops and eateries with boutiques where you can get some great souvenirs. You’ll also find the Tokyu Department Store, Tokyu Honten Store, Bunkamura, The Daiso 100 Yen Store, Zero Gate, Parko, and the Loft. They even have a Disney store.
