Eight miles southwest of the city center, Bristol airport is a regional hub for transportation. Over eight million passengers use the airport each year, making it the ninth busiest in the UK. The origins of the airport are far more humble. In 1927, local businessmen founded the Bristol and Wessex Aeroplane Club, which initially used nearby Filton aerodrome. In 1929, the club pitched the city the idea of building a new airport. Opened in 1930, Bristol was only the third civilian airport in the UK.

Passenger flights were still something of a rarity when World War II broke out. The Royal Air Force established a training school for pilots close to Bristol's airport. During German air raids, decoy fires at this airfield helped encourage attacking pilots to drop their bombs harmlessly in the fields outside the city, saving Bristol from bombing.

After the war, the first airport was found to be too small for increasingly large civilian aircraft. Instead, the RAF base was redeveloped into what is now Bristol Airport. Opened in 1957, the airport was expanded in the 1960s and the 1980s, and in 1997, became known as Bristol International Airport.

• Step back in time on the SS Great Britain. Bristol’s top tourist attraction is a former passenger steamship that one sailed between Bristol and New York City. Now, the ship is a maritime museum devoted to Bristol’s long history of shipping.
