About Innsbruck

Located in a broad valley between high mountains, Innsbruck takes its name from the river Inn which flows through the town. Human activity in the area goes back to the Stone Age, and the town entered the historical record when the Romans established a settlement here in the 4th century A.D. The town's location close to the Brenner Pass, one of the easiest places to cross the Alps, made the town an important trade route.

Innsbruck became the capital of Tyrol in 1429 and was the residence of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I. As a result, Innsbruck became an important medieval town. Later, it became part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was ruled from Vienna for centuries, with only a brief period of Bavarian occupation in the early 19th century interfering with the Habsburg rule.

Although the Alps were an important battleground during the First World War, Innsbruck escaped the conflict. It wasn't so lucky in the Second World War, when it suffered multiple bombing raids. Modern Innsbruck is one of the most important towns in the Alps and is part of a semi-autonomous region along with the Italian province of South Tyrol. The mix of Italian and Austrian influencers make Innsbruck a fascinating place to visit.

Things to do in Innsbruck

As the host city of both the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, Innsbruck is synonymous with winter sport. However, there’s more to the town than ski slopes and chalets. Whatever time of year you visit, you’ll find something to do here.

  • Explore the historic heart of Innsbruck in the Altstadt, or Old Town. Some of the buildings in this charming district go back 500 years, and the quaint medieval streets are the perfect place to explore. Plus, you'll find plenty of bars and restaurants to keep you refreshed.
  • Experience the lives of European nobility at the Hofburg Imperial Palace. Dating back to the 15th century, this palace was the home of Austrian royalty when they visited the city. The on-site museum will explain the history of Innsbruck and Austria as a whole and give you a better understanding of the vanished Habsburg Empire that once ruled central Europe.
  • Visit Austria's largest natural park via cable car. The Innsbrucker Nordkette takes you high above the city and offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains. The full journey takes 20 minutes, but there are multiple stops along the way where you can ski in the winter, hike in the summer, and enjoy the Alpine playground.
  • Delve into the world of crystals at Swarovski Crystal World. This unique attraction features a giant outdoor sculpture with a waterfall, and inside you'll find the stunning Chambers of Wonder that contain thousands of crystals.
  • Go shopping along Maria-Theresien Strasse. Innsbruck's busiest Street runs through the heart of the Old Town and is the place to get some retail therapy. Mostly pedestrianized, the broad boulevard has all the top brands and is also full of bars and restaurants where you can take a break or grab some dinner in the heart of the city.

Transit options in Innsbruck

  • Innsbruck airport has year-round flights from Vienna and Frankfurt. In the busy winter season, it also takes flights from the UK and Amsterdam. Bus F carries passengers from the airport to the center of the city.
  • For a larger airport, Munich is around two and a half hours away. It can be reached by train or by direct transfer.
  • Innsbruck has four tramlines and a well-established bus network that makes it easy to get around town. Many of the bus lines converge at the train station in the center of the city.
