Activities and attractions near Milan

Duomo Milan

Milan Cathedral is arguably one of the city’s most popular attractions. Its real name is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Nescente, although many people just refer to it as Il Duomo. Holding up to nearly 40,000 people at once, this grand cathedral is one of the biggest of its kind in the world. The stained glass windows located in the nave are the largest on the globe and date back to sometime between the 15th and 16th centuries.

Duomo Milan was made in the Gothic style with construction beginning in the 14th century, although the exterior was only finished under the rule of Napoleon in the 1800s. If you’re brave enough, make the climb to the cathedral dome and be rewarded with breathtaking views of Milan and its surrounding landscape.

Duomo Milan bag policy

The cathedral is frequented often by both tourists and worshippers and in respect for the space and everyone entering it, guests are asked to leave big bags behind before visiting. Stow your stuff with one of our highly-rated store partners near the cathedral. Use the Bounce app to find a left luggage storage facility nearby. Luggage deposit and pick-up take no time at all when you’ve booked online in advance.

Brera Art Gallery

Brera Art Gallery, locally known as the Pinacoteca di Brera, is one of the city’s many beautiful museums. It’s situated in a former Jesuit college that was constructed sometime between 1651 and 1773, although it was later turned into the Academy of Fine Arts in 1776.

The art collection housed here today contains works by many prominent Italian artists, including Giovanni Bellini, Mantegna, Van Dyck and Paolo Veronese. Aside from the old masters, artists like Braque, Picasso, and Modigliani have works on display here as well. There’s also a botanical garden, a library, and an observatory on site.

Brera Art Gallery bag policy

You can’t bring bulky bags or suitcases into the art gallery, so make sure that you book luggage storage with us first. Our very convenient service makes it easy to store luggage in Milan so you don’t have to carry non-essential items around with you all day.

Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci

One of Milan’s most impressive treasures is the famous Last Supper. This marvel is one of Leonardo da Vinci’s best-known masterpieces and is housed in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie where it’s painted onto the refectory wall.

The church was damaged in World War II, allowing the already old painting to be exposed to weathering. After the completion of a major restoration in 1999, careful measures are in place to protect this mural and prevent deterioration. Only small groups at a time are allowed into the room with the painting, and tickets need to be bought well in advance.

Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci bag policy

Guests are allowed to bring strollers and small day packs into the Last Supper exhibit, but large bags and suitcases are not permitted. Although there are timed luggage lockers available on the site, you can leave your things at our left luggage service for as long as you need. Use the Bounce app to create your online booking before your visit and drop off your bags on the way.

Shopping in Milan

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is not your regular shopping gallery. The gorgeous building was designed by Giuseppe Mengoni and dates back to sometime between 1865 and 1877. At the time of its construction, it was the biggest shopping center of its kind in all of Europe, and today it’s the oldest shopping gallery in all of Italy. Come here to grab a coffee or lunch in one of its cafes, or to shop in its luxurious shops and jewelry stores.

Quadrilatero della Moda

Welcome to the best shopping district in Milan. The Quadrilatero delle Moda is made up of four streets; Via Manzoni, Corso Venezia, Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga. Stroll around the area and do some window shopping in the local shops that line the streets. These welcoming stores stock the latest fashion trends. Keep an eye out for Missoni, Prada, Fendi, Armani, Valentino, and other similar name brands. Whether or not you're staying in this neighborhood in Milan, don't miss the shopping experience.

Top restaurants in Milan

Erba Brusca

Although the menu is small, everything at Erbe Brusca is worth trying. This restaurant uses local ingredients, many of which are grown in the vegetable garden right next door. Their menu options change pretty often, but if the pasta served with clams, truffles and wild sorrel is available we urge you to try it. Take your pick from one of the natural wines on their list and you won’t find a better meal in Milan.

28 Posti

Although it’s impossible to tire of Italian cuisine, the menu at 28 Posti is inventive and refreshing. The restaurant only has 28 seats, hence its name, so come early or reserve if possible. The menu always has something new and dishes don’t stick around for long, but you can expect enticing flavors like burnt onion and fermented strawberries or rigatoni tossed in miso. If you’re having trouble deciding, simply order a tasting menu.

Transit options in Milan

Milan Airport

There are a few Milan airports; the Milan Malpensa Airport, the Milan-Bergamo Airport, and the Milan Linate Airport. Out of all of Milan’s airports, you’ll probably be arriving at the Milano Malpensa Airport if you’re traveling internationally and the Milan Linate Airport if you’re flying from within Italy. The Milan-Bergamo Airport is your best choice if you’re going somewhere like Lake Como, the Ticino region in Switzerland, or if you’re going to explore the Italian Alps.

Milan’s airports do have a monitored baggage storage area, and we have plenty of locations offering luggage storage near the airport as well. The luggage lockers in the airport might have long lines, so book with us in advance to save time and ensure availability.

Metro

Wondering how to get around Milan? One of the most effective ways to travel around Milan is by using the underground metro. There are four lines that run throughout the city, some of which can bring you places like the Milan Central Station. You’ll be able to use the same metro ticket on the buses or trams for up to 90 minutes after being validated, which is great if you’re using different types of transit to get around. Tickets usually cost about €2.00.

The metro stations in Milan don’t offer a place to store luggage, so you’ll have to leave them elsewhere while you explore. Luckily, we have plenty of luggage storage locations around the city so you can find a spot near you.

Tram

The tram can take you to other neighborhoods around the city center of Milan. Once you get on the tram and stamp your ticket it’ll be valid for 90 minutes and also lets you use the buses, as well as one metro ride. Fun fact; these trams have been running in Milan since 1876! The average price for a ticket is €1.50, or you can get a day pass for €4.50.

You can ride the trams with your bags, but there isn’t anywhere to store them. Find one of our partners and store your things with us while you enjoy the city. For an added bonus, the local businesses we partner with offer a wealth of knowledge on the best places to go in Milan.

Bus

Although the tram and metro do a great job of getting you to all of the main attractions in Milan, buses can be used to get between neighborhoods or places that the other transit networks don’t reach. Tickets cost €1.50 for a single ride, just like the trams.

There are no storage lockers at Milan’s bus stations. If you need somewhere to leave your luggage in Milan, take advantage of our multiple locations offering Milan luggage storage services.

Milan train station

The main train station is the Milan Central railway station, also known as the Milano Centrale railway station. Dating back to 1931, this grand station is an attraction in itself. There are international trains here that can transport you to major cities like Turin, Venice, Bologna, Rome, Naples and Salerno, as well as the border of France, the border of Swiss Canton of Valais and the border of Swiss Canton of Graubunden, for example.

There’s also a suburban train service offered at the other Milan train stations, like the Garibaldi train station. With 11 lines connecting about 124 train stations, it can be a useful way to navigate Milan on your trip. Feel like popping over to Lake Como on a day trip? Tickets are as cheap as €5.20 for the hour-long journey.

Bag storage is available at the Milan Centrale railway station, but you may face lindues and limited available space. To stow your belongings while you leave Milan for the day, make use of our many options for luggage storage in Milan, including near the main railway station, and in other cities that the trains travel to.
