About Docklands

Docklands is a waterfront suburb of the Australian city of Melbourne, situated just 2 kilometers outside of the city’s Central Business District. Since the 1880s, the area formerly known as West Melbourne Swap had a comprehensive network of heavy rail infrastructure and wharves, serving as a major dock. However, when shipping traffic started to decrease, the area was abandoned and became a hotspot for dance culture and served as a venue for the underground rave dance scene. This affinity for dance carried on throughout the years and still exists to this day, with most dance events taking place in bigger venues around Docklands.

In 1997, the construction of the Docklands Stadium (now known as Marvel Stadium) started as part of urban renewal to boost interest in the area. The idea was to open boulevards, waterfront promenades, entertainment venues, and other modern developments while still retaining some original buildings and architecture to preserve Dockland’s history. Today, the suburb is now one of the country’s most popular address for corporations, serving as the headquarters for the biggest names in business such as AXA, ANZ, National Australia Bank and Bendigo Bank. Moreover, it is also home to some of Melbourne’s top tourist attractions.

Fun fact: In July 2007, Docklands was declared a part of the city of Melbourne. This resulted in the city doubling in size and gaining a waterfront area.
