 About Venice Train Station

Venezia Santa Lucia is a train station found in the northern edge of Venice, a historic city in the country of Italy. Santa Lucia is the city’s central station and one of two key railway stations found in Venice. The other station is Mestre and is located in the mainland district of the same name. The two stations are linked to each other by the Liberty Bridge (Ponte della Liberta in the local language). They are both under the management of Grandi Stazioni.

Santa Lucia is unofficially referred to as the Venice Train Station since it is the only railway station found within the Venice city center - sitting right on the famed Grand Canal. Plans for the station were first drawn up in 1924 by architect Angiolo Mazzoni. The station was developed over the next decade with the help of Virgilio Vallot. In 1952, Venezia Santa Lucia was eventually completed and started its operations. Years later, in 2009, a renovation of the station that cost 24 million euros was initiated and was completed by 2012.

The Venice Train Station is connected to a majority of key routes to cities within both Italy and Europe, with about 450 trains coming and going through the station daily. Moreover, the station welcomes almost 30 million passengers every year, making it one of the busiest railway terminals in Europe.

Fun fact: The station is linked to the rest of Venice via a water transportation system, either through the vaporetto (public water bus) or private water taxis.
