About Waverley Station

Waverley Station is one of the busiest train stations in Scotland, with services running across the whole of the UK, including London, Bristol, and Leeds. As well as being one of the busiest stations in Scotland, Waverley has more platforms than any other station in the country.

The area that's now Waverley Station was a town known as Calton. North British Railway got permission to demolish the town in the early 1840s—very little remains of Calton other than the ruins of an old church. Waverley Station first opened in 1846 but underwent significant changes in the 20th century.

Now an essential transport hub, Edinburgh Waverley features tons of stores and restaurants to enjoy while waiting for your train. It’s also within walking distance from the city’s major tourist attractions, including the Royal Mile, Scott Monument, Holyrood Park and Edinburgh Castle.

Fun fact: Waverley Station is named after a novel by Sir Walter Scott and is the only railway station named after a piece of literature.

Things to do near Waverley Station

Situated at the center of Edinburgh, Waverley Station has excellent amenities and is close to some of the city's best attractions. If you've got a few hours to spend before the next train, or you don't fancy straying too far, check out these things to do near Waverley Station.

Princes Street Gardens

Get a nice view of the historic Edinburgh Castle from Princes Street Gardens. It’s only about six minutes’ walk from the train station and is regarded as one of the Scotland capital’s most important urban parks. It features an artificial hill called The Mound, which connects Edinburgh’s Old Town and New Town. It’s beautiful year-round and a favorite gathering place in the city centre among locals and tourists.

Calton Hill

Beyond the eastern end of Princess Street, you’ll find a volcanic hill and a UNESCO World Heritage Site—Calton Hill. Due to its elevated position, you can expect to witness striking views of the city’s skyline, including many iconic landmarks like Arthur’s Seat and Edinburgh Castle. It also features several neoclassic monuments, such as the Nelson Monument, the National Monument, and the City Observatory.

Pay attention to the time, especially if you only have a few hours before your train arrives, as it’s easy to get lost in the beauty of nature and the views at Calton Hill. Drop off your bulky baggage before hiking so nothing slows you down during your trip.

The Real Mary King's Close

Reopened in 2003, Mary King’s Close tells the story of the plague victims and the misery that tormented the city throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. It’s nestled on the famous Royal Mile in the heart of the historic capital.

Explore several closes or alleyways and see the living environments of the poorest residents of the Old Town. Many find it a life-changing experience as they wander through the Real Mary King’s Close and hear the spine-chilling stories based on people who lived, worked, and died in the area.

The Real Mary King's Close bag policy

Mary King’s Close has storage lockers that guests can use for a fee. Due to limited capacity, it’s best to book with an alternative luggage storage service like Bounce. Bypass waiting in line by pre-booking online through our luggage storage app.

The People's Story Museum

Here, visitors can witness the fascinating displays reflecting the lives of the city residents from the 18th century to the present day.

The museum is housed in a former prison dating from 1591. It has three floors with different exhibitions that show the day-to-day lives of the town’s inhabitants—their jobs, how their houses were, and how they enjoyed their free time.
