The square was designed by architect Juan Gómez de Mora and features a Classical design with ornate three-story buildings with porticos lining this massive 420-foot long plaza.

Due to several fires, the plaza has been rebuilt on numerous occasions, with many architects leaving their mark on the area. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Plaza Mayor was one of the city's busiest areas and was considered the center of Hapsburg Madrid. At the center of the plaza, you'll find one of Madrid's most famous monuments, a statue of Philip III on horseback designed by sculptor Giambologna.
