Museums in Montevideo

Throughout its history, Uruguay has become a melting pot of cultures and traditions, allowing access to some pretty unique experiences. Montevideo has several fantastic museums and attractions that will draw you in and immerse you in the country's heritage.

Museo Andes 1972

The tragedy of Uruguayan Flight 571 is detailed in this museum, as well as the true strength of the human spirit and fight for survival. In 1972, when flight 571 crashed in the Andes Mountains, 29 people died. However, 16 people managed to stay alive and were rescued after spending 72 days in the freezing temperatures of the mountains. The movie Alive is based on this horrific tragedy, and the museum walks through the survivor’s struggle to survive and their miraculous rescue.

Museo Andes 1972 bag policy

This museum doesn’t have a clear bag policy, although it has storage lockers available on site. If you’re worried that your large bags won’t fit or you don’t want to wait in lines at the luggage lockers, book luggage storage with us instead. We have no size restrictions, and when you book online with us, you won’t be stuck waiting to drop off your things.

Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales

Come and appreciate the works of some of the world’s best artists at the National Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo. The museum’s collection includes paintings by talented local masters, like Figari and Blanes, as well as internationally revered artists like Henry Moore, Goya, Paul Klee, and Picasso. Rotating exhibits are on display regularly, and we recommend taking a guided tour for the best experience.

It’s unclear what this museum's bag policy is, but many art galleries prefer guests not to bring large bags. If this museum has similar guidelines, consider stopping by a Bounce baggage storage location before checking out the exhibits.

Museo del Carnaval

Although Museo del Carnaval is small, it has a lot of personality and offers a glimpse into the traditions and celebrations that have happened in Montevideo for over 100 years now. As you explore the exhibits, you’ll see impressive drums, colorful costumes, and elegant masks. There are also video and audio recordings of past parades and festivals.

It’s not stated whether suitcases are allowed inside the museum. Don’t let your belongings get in the way of your travel plans; store luggage safely with us for a few hours and explore the museum without any worries.

Whether the museum you’re visiting has a strict baggage policy or you just want to enjoy a luggage-free day, storing your suitcase in Montevideo is a great idea. We have locations close to the city’s main attractions and a fantastic customer support team to answer any of your questions.

Shopping in Montevideo

Shopping in Montevideo is an experience unlike any other. Head to one of the open-air markets and see what shopping’s like for the locals. The sights, sounds, smells, and even tastes of the area will surround you. Be prepared to haggle a bit in the markets. Vendors are known to have great fun negotiating over prices.

Mercado Agrícola de Montevideo

Once strictly a fresh food market, the Mercado, as locals tend to call this market, now offers an array of wares ranging from fresh foods to amazing souvenirs. Grab a cup of coffee and mill around with the locals, searching out the best bargains of the day.

Feria de Tristán Narvaja

This traditional street market encompasses the essence of Montevideo. Open every Sunday, locals and tourists search for terrific finds while visiting with friends and passing the time on a lazy weekend afternoon. Located in the Cordón neighborhood, this market has grown to cover several blocks and is a way of life for locals.

Montevideo Shopping Center

More like the typical shopping malls you’re used to seeing in the other major cities, the Montevideo Shopping Center was the very first mall to open in the city. Stroll through the mall while window shopping, or browse through some of the shops to treat yourself to something new. The food court is there for whenever you need refreshments.

After a successful shopping day, you’ll need to find somewhere to store your shopping bags. Complete your booking using our app and make your way to the closest Bounce luggage storage service. You can feel comfortable leaving your things in the security of our care.
