About Hoover Dam Bypass

Located just 1,500 feet from the Hoover Dam, the Hoover Dam Bypass is 1,905 feet long, 880 feet above the Colorado River, cost $114 million, and took seven years to complete. Linking Mohave County, Arizona to Clark County, Nevada, it is the second-highest bridge in the United States after the Royal Gorge Bridge in Canon City, Colorado. What makes this structure even more special is the pedestrian access, where you can get some stunning views of the dam, Black Canyon, and the river below. Think of the selfies you can get from up there!

Another thing that makes the bridge special is its name. The Hoover Dam Bypass’ official name is the Mike O’Callaghan – Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, but everyone calls it the Hoover Dam Bypass. Mike O’Callaghan was the governor of Nevada in the 70s, and Pat Tillman was a football player with the Arizona Cardinals team who joined the army and was killed in 2004 in Afghanistan. The bridge is in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, where there are nine wilderness areas, 23 historic structures, 500 species of animals, and 900 kinds of plants. You’re also only 30 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip, where you can try your luck at winning some money.

Fun Fact: Hoover Dam Bypass was the first concrete and steel arch bridge built in the United States.
