About the station

Avignon Central Train Station, found in the Avignon city center, serves as a vital gateway to this historic city in the Provence region of Southern France. Unlike its counterpart, the Avignon TGV Station located on the outskirts, the central station is conveniently nestled within the city's walls, making it an ideal arrival point for travelers eager to explore Avignon's rich medieval history, including the famed Palais des Papes and the iconic Pont d'Avignon.

The significance of Avignon Train Station extends beyond its role in facilitating regional travel. It acts as a crucial hub that connects Avignon to major French cities and other picturesque towns in Provence. Its central location offers immediate immersion into the city's charming streets, vibrant markets, and architectural marvels, so don't just think of it as a point of transit but as a welcoming introduction to the heart of Provencal culture and history.

What is the main train station in Avignon, France?

The main station is Gare d'Avignon Centre, located on Boulevard Saint-Roch. This is generally referred to as the Avignon Train Station. In fact, there are two Avignon train stations, the other being the Avignon TGV Station, which stands for Trains à Grande Vitesse, which is the station for the fast trains that pass through the city from Paris and down to Spain.

Do French train stations have lockers?

Yes, some do. In Paris, the major stations of Gare de Lyon, Gare du Nord, Gare de l'Est, Gare de Marne-la-Vallée Chessy, and Gare Montparnasse offer luggage lockers. One downside is that you can't leave anything in a Paris station luggage locker for more than 72 hours. As a result, it might make more sense to find luggage storage facilities outside the station, such as Bounce, which doesn't impose a time limit and can store any size of item.

Can train stations hold luggage?

Yes, in certain cases, a train station will have options to store your luggage, either with a luggage storage service or station lockers. Only some stations permit luggage storage on the premises, so it's best to check with your specific train station to verify.

Does Avignon train station have luggage storage?

The Central Avignon Station does not have luggage lockers or on-site luggage storage facilities. You'll need to find other luggage storage options in the city operated by different companies. Bounce's extensive network of convenient locations is a great choice in Avignon.

Things to do near Avignon Train Station

Remparts d'Avignon

The Remparts d'Avignon, the iconic walls that encircle the city, are imposing medieval fortifications built between the 14th and 15th centuries. They were constructed under the auspices of the popes who resided in Avignon during the period when the city was the center of the Christian world. Spanning approximately 4.3 kilometers and punctuated by 39 towers and seven main gates, the walls were designed to protect the Papal Comtat and its residents from external threats.

This is perhaps the closest Avignon attraction to the station. It starts quite literally right outside the station doors. So, find some luggage storage and head out on a historical tour of the city. It's the perfect starting point to see a lot at first, and then you can circle back to shops, restaurants, and areas that appeal to you. Plus, you can do as little or as much of the 4.3 kilometers as you want.

Rocher des Doms

A mere 20-minute walk from Avignon Central Station, the Rocher des Doms offers a serene escape with panoramic views of Avignon and the Rhône River. This beautifully landscaped park sits atop a rocky outcrop next to the Palais des Papes. It's the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, a picnic, or simply to enjoy the breathtaking vistas of the city, the Pont Saint-Bénézet, and the surrounding Provence countryside. The park also features a playground for children, and the Avignon Cathedral is here, so if you're traveling as a family, this is the ideal spot for everyone to stretch their legs after a long train ride.

Musée du Petit Palais

The Musée du Petit Palais is super close to the Rocher des Doms and the Cathedral. It houses an impressive collection of Renaissance paintings and sculptures, with a focus on Italian and Provencal art from the 13th to the 16th centuries. The museum, located in a beautifully restored Episcopal palace not far from the station, showcases works by artists such as Botticelli and Carpaccio. Open to the public since 1976, this is a must-visit for art enthusiasts keen to explore the rich artistic heritage of the region.

Place de l'Horloge

Ten minutes on foot from the station will get you to the Place de l'Horloge. This lively square is surrounded by historic buildings, including the city's town hall and a beautifully adorned opera house. With its numerous cafes and restaurants, the square is an ideal spot to experience the local cuisine, enjoy a cup of coffee, and watch the world go by. Why not plan to have a meal here and try a traditional brasserie or non-provencal fare like couscous and pizza? There are seafood restaurants, too.

The Grand Opera is here, as is Avignon's City Hall, and you can even catch a movie, provided they have something showing in "VO," which translates to the original version, meaning English. Throughout the year, the Place de l'Horloge hosts various events and markets, making it a central point of activity in Avignon.

Getting around Avignon from Avignon Train Station

Pont d'Avignon

The Pont d'Avignon, officially known as Pont Saint-Bénézet, is a legendary medieval bridge spanning the Rhône River. Originally constructed in the 12th century, it was a marvel of engineering, extending over 900 meters with 22 arches. However, the bridge was frequently damaged by floods, leading to its partial destruction in the 17th century. Today, only four of the original arches remain, but that doesn't mean this isn't a worthwhile stop on your city tour.

To get from the station to the Pont Saint-Bénézet, you'll need to walk to the Jaurès bus stop and hop on. The fare is € 1.30 for a single trip, and you'll exit at Porte de l'Oulle, where you'll need to walk about 400 meters to have a wonderful view of the bridge.

Avignon Les Halles

It's a toss-up how you choose to get to this next attraction, which is an iconic food market. It takes 15 minutes on foot or about 10 minutes if you want to grab a bus. If you do, it's the same bus line and station as Pont d'Avignon, except you'll get off at Horloge.

Any foodie should definitely add this destination to their Avignon itinerary. It showcases the Provence region's culinary proficiency perfectly, and even the building is worth a few photos. It's adorned with a lush vertical garden - something you don't see every day. The market features over 40 stalls where you can pick up anything from spices to local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Maison Manguin

For something a little different, consider a trip outside the main city center to a distillery called Maison Manguin. Established with a passion for traditional distillation methods and a dedication to local ingredients. You should sample (and bring home) some of the exceptional olive-based spirits if you have the chance.

To get to Maison Manguin, you'll need two buses and about 45 minutes. Leave from Jaurès and, like the Pont, get off at Porte de l'Oulle. From there, take bus 23 Barthelasse Ecole for nine stops to Rhodes. You will need to walk for about 20 minutes to reach the distillery, but once you have a taste of one of their concoctions, it will all be worth it!

Luggage storage near Avignon Train Station

When you need to store your luggage for a few hours between train connections or if you have an early checkout but want to continue exploring Avignon, you'll need a plan for your bags. Bounce partners with local shops and various other businesses to provide a wide variety of luggage storage options. In Avignon, our most popular locations are near the Tourist Office and the Musée Angladon in the heart of the city center.

When you plan a trip to Provence, there's almost too much choice of what to do, and smaller cities like Avignon tend to lose out to mega-stars like Marseille and Aix-en-Provence, which is a real shame. So pop your unneeded baggage in storage and head out exploring. With convenient transit links and major attractions within walking distance of Avignon Station, this city is accessible to everyone.
