About Bergamo train station

Bergamo sits to the northeast of Milan in the Lombardy region, and is part of Italy’s industrial heartland. As a result, Bergamo doesn’t get the attention of other iconic Italian destinations like Florence or Venice. But in a country as overrun with tourists as Italy can sometimes be, Bergamo offers a chance to get off the well-worn tourist trail and see a more authentic side of this popular country.

As is the case with many European cities, Bergamo’s train station is ideally placed to explore the city. Most visitors to Bergamo come to explore the Citta Alta, the Old City, which is easy to reach from the central train station. But there are other sides of this underrated city to explore. And for most people, that exploration will begin at the train station.

Opened in 1854, the train station connects Bergamo with towns throughout the region and the country. Express trains to Milan stop here, as do regional trains to destinations such as Brescia and Pisa. Bergamo's ATB bus line 1 also stops at the station, connecting the train station to both the airport and the old city.

  • Appreciate the creativity of Bergamo's modern residents at the wall art near the station. These towering murals include a building-size painting of a bird carrying heavy bags, which can hit a little close to home for travelers searching for luggage storage near Bergamo Train Station.

A small exhibition tells the story of the soldiers and of the town, and the observation deck at the top of the tower offers an unsurpassed view of Bergamo.
  • See more well-known art at the Accademia Carrara Museum. Dedicated to art from the heyday of old Bergamo in the 15th to 19th centuries, the museum houses works by Andrea Mantegna, Canaletto, Raffaello Sanzio, Sandro Botticelli, and other important figures in Italian art.
