About Cagliari

Cagliari is the perfect place to start exploring the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia. As Sardinia's capital and largest city, Cagliari is home to many of the island's best historic landmarks, family-friendly attractions, and traditional restaurants. Cagliari is also Sardinia's main transport hub, with the Cagliari Elmas Airport offering flights to destinations across Italy and Europe. Cagliari's port also provides ferry crossings to Napoli, Trapani, Palmero and more.

Sardinia has been inhabited continuously for around 12,000 years since the Neolithic period. The earliest recorded settlement at the site of modern-day Cagliari was a Phoenician colony known as Karaly, established around 600 BC. Over the centuries, Cagliari has been controlled by many different civilizations, including the Romans, the Crown of Aragon, and the House of Savoy. Sardinia and Cagliari eventually became a part of Italy in the mid-19th century during the unification of Italy.

Since Italy's unification, Cagliari has become a popular holiday destination, thanks to its diverse history, unique culture, and postcard-perfect countryside.

Bastione Saint Remy

Bastione Saint Remy is one of Cagliari's most recognizable structures. This fortification was built at the turn of the 20th century on top of the old city walls, dating back to the 13th century. Adorned with white marble and decorative archways, the Bastione Saint Remy sits overlooking two of Cagliari's most popular high streets, via Garibaldi and via Manno. Inside the fort is a lavish walkway and an elaborate staircase leading to a gallery containing artwork dating back hundreds of years. Stop by the cafe atop the fort at night for a spectacular view overlooking the city.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari

Due to Cagliari's lengthy history, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari is one of the most exciting museums in Sardinia. The museum has a plethora of intriguing local archeological finds, dating from over 10,000 years to before Sardinia's Nuragic period. In the collection, you'll find everything from pottery to glasswork to ancient sculptures from bygone civilizations. Some of the rarest relics from the museum's collections include a bronze figure of a Nuragic chief, the Giants of Mont'e Prama, and ironwork swords dating back to the 13th century BC.

Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Cagliari bag policy

We’ve got you covered with baggage storage options all over the city. Unlike luggage lockers, we have no size restrictions, so you can leave any of your bags with us. We always charge the same price, no matter the size or weight of your bags.

Parco Naturale Molentargius Saline

This wetland park is one of Cagliari's most popular natural areas and is an integral part of Sardinia's ecosystem. For over 250 years, the area has been used for sea salt extraction, with the name Molentargius derived from molenti. Molenti means donkey in Sardo, the primary salt transport method in the 18th century. Located just south of the city near Poetto Beach, this 4,000-acre park is an essential refuge for wildlife, especially birds. Parco Naturale Molentargius Saline is frequented by roughly 230 bird species, including the region's famous population of pink flamingos. Birdwatchers should bring their binoculars, and there are also plenty of hiking trails if you fancy a walk around this scenic park.

Make a splash at Poetto. One of the most popular beaches in Sardinia, Poetto is the perfect place to top up your tan. It's also famous for its clubs and bars if you fancy a night on the town. Stretching for about 8km, this beach is a popular spot for all outdoor activities, from sunbathing and swimming to windsurfing.

Parco di Monte Urpinu

Escape the city at Parco di Monte Urpinu. There’s also a playground for kids and plenty of wildlife, including ducks and turtles in the pond, as well as free-roaming peacocks.

Torre dell’Elefante

Discover local history at Torre dell'Elefante. A medieval tower located in Cagliari's historic quarter, visitors are welcome to climb to the top of this imposing marble structure, which offers terrific views of the Caligari Marina. The tower was originally built to act as a defense against the Aragonese and dates back to 1307. While you’re here, keep an eye out for the statue of the elephant which the tower was named after. It’s not very big, and some people miss it completely.

Torre dell’Elefante bag policy

There’s no strict policy against bags when visiting this location, but if you want to climb the tower to see the beautiful views of the area, it’s a good idea to store your things in advance.
