Store your luggage around Calvi with Bounce

Given the chance, who wouldn't want to travel to Corsica? The birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, the entire island is teeming with history and scenic views. Calvi is one of the picturesque towns on the island, nestled in a lovely bay that's overlooked by an intriguing medieval citadel that's definitely worth exploring.

Although the town is small, with a year-round population of about 5,000 residents, tourists arrive on the island in droves, yet many don't make it to this charming location. You won't find the crowds here that are more likely in better-known spots like Ajaccio; Calvi is a bit of a trek from the capital.

Despite its size, there is plenty to do other than lounging on the beach here (although we definitely recommend that). Calvi Train Station is the gateway to the town for most who land at Ajaccio Airport, but Calvi has a small international airport as well.

It's safe to say that you'll have tons to keep you busy while in Calvi, so here's everything you should know about the shopping, restaurants, and attractions. Since you'll have lots to do, it's also important to find luggage storage. Calvi has what you need in this respect, especially when you choose a left luggage service like Bounce.

Checking out of your hotel, but you still want to explore? Bounce can keep whatever you don't need safe. Planning a day trip to Porto-Vecchio? We've got you covered.

Calvi city guide

Top things to do in Calvi

As you might have guessed, spending time at the beach is among Calvi's main attractions, but that doesn't mean that this town is a one-hit wonder. Its location on the northwest coast is an ideal jumping-off point to tour the many quaint (and very scenic) villages in the Balagne region. In addition to its natural beauty, Calvi has many restaurants, shopping areas, and informative attractions. Just remember that due to the narrow alleys in Old Town and the time you may want to spend at the beach, seeking luggage storage before you head out for a day of sightseeing is recommended.

Museums in Calvi

The Citadel

While not technically a museum in the strictest sense, Calvi's citadel is steeped in history. The area was built by the Genoese. The first fortifications in the upper town were made in the 13th century, and construction on the tower began in the 1450s. Fortifications continued for over 200 years resulting in an impressive network of alleys, defense structures, and amazing views out to sea.

Other notable sites in this same area include the oratory of Saint-Antoine and the church of St. John the Baptist. Whatever you do, don't forget your camera! Plus, if you're traveling with kids, the citadel offers a scavenger hunt that's available year-round. Pick up a listening device for a small fee and travel around to 11 different locations looking for clues.

Musée des Arts de la Citadelle de Calvi (MUDACC)

Also within the citadel, MUDACC has been open since 2019 and features Contemporary Art Fund pieces. You'll find this free museum in two of the old guard rooms. Since Corsica is forever tied with Napoleon Bonaparte, the first items to appear here were works of Napoleon by Hom Nguyen. Now, it's a contemporary art museum with around 80 pieces, including paintings and sculptures. Be warned that the museum is only open during the week, even in peak season, and the hours vary, so double-check in advance.

Occi ruins

Located about a 15-minute drive from Calvi above the town of Lumio, you'll find the abandoned village of Occi. It was completely deserted in the 19th century, and the very last resident died here in 1918. As people moved down the hill to Lumio, the village started to decline in just about every way. There is no museum per se here, but a stroll through the abandoned village is definitely a glimpse back in time.

Many of the historical attractions in Calvi don't specifically prohibit large bags or suitcases, but with hills to climb and a labyrinth of alleys to navigate, you'll definitely be glad you took the time to store luggage ahead of time.

Shopping in Calvi

Due to its size and location, travelers won't find large shopping malls or even any familiar stores in Calvi. Nothing is open 24 hours, and stores often close on Mondays and at lunchtime. What you will find are local boutiques, souvenir stores, lively markets, and grocery stores.

Boulevard Wilson

For women's clothing, interesting home goods, and great window shopping, take a wander along boulevard Wilson. Docks of the Bay, Cala Marina, and Mare di Latte Calvi are all small local clothing stores where you can find your next perfect outfit. These shops aren't the department stores you might be used to, so don't plan on bringing any large luggage inside. Instead, drop your suitcases off with Bounce while you enjoy Calvi shopping at its finest.

Rue Georges Clemenceau

Another little pocket of clothing and souvenir shops is rue Georges Clemenceau. Set back one street from the water, it's easy to detour from here to an idyllic café or to the beach. Particular highlights include the leather goods shop L'atelier du cuir and the hat store Casa di Panama.

Covered Market

Less than 10 minutes from the Citadel, Calvi's covered market is open daily from 8 am to 12:30 p.m. and features the best of the local producers. You'll find everything from meat and seafood to cheese, produce, and spices. This is an ideal stop for anyone planning a beach picnic or has a self-catering apartment as their accommodation. And it couldn't be easier to find. It's smack-dab in the middle between boulevard Wilson and rue Georges Clemenceau.

You'll have a much better experience at the market when you can focus on the beautiful produce on display and the locals going about their daily shopping. What you don't want to worry about is your bag or suitcase. Trust Bounce to look after your stuff while you enjoy this quintessentially French experience.

Restaurants in Calvi

As you might expect from its location and history, the restaurants in Calvi tend to focus on Italian, French, and broader Mediterranean cuisine. Dining at many of the hotels on the island is an option, but here are a few favorites to get your culinary tour started:

Le Comme Chez Soi

The name of this seaside restaurant translates to "Like at Home," and once you arrive, you'll wish your home had views like this (if it doesn't already). You'll dine in the shadow of the surrounding mountains while watching the moored boats bob softly in the calm water. But the views aren't the only reason to come here. The menu skews French with fresh seafood and meats prepared exquisitely, and if you're not in the mood for a full meal, pick a few tapas and a glass of wine and kick back for an hour.

Via Marine Le Bistrot

Le Bistrot has one of the best patios in Calvi, and that's saying something. The outdoor dining is really more of a deck that overlooks the pristine beach and water beyond. This restaurant is a little more casual than some others due to its beachside location, and it offers a selection of Mediterranean dishes. You can opt for pizza, Buddha bowls, pasta, salads, and burgers. After a day at the beach, there's nothing better than setting up here for a relaxing meal.

Restaurant Santa Maria

When you're spending your time shopping on rue Clemenceau, it's a good idea to plan a lunch break at Restaurant Santa Maria. You can sit inside, but it's recommended that you try to secure a spot on the umbrella-covered patio. The menu is small here, with a particular penchant for pasta and risotto, and the dessert menu is especially long with creme brulé, tiramisu mousse, and ice cream, among other options.

Space is very limited inside these small restaurants, especially on the outdoor terraces, so make sure you have a plan if you're carrying your luggage with you. Book ahead using the Bounce app to secure a convenient place to store luggage and avoid cramming your bags under the table.

Conclusion

It's really the lucky ones who get to travel to Corsica. The beaches, the nightlife, the history, it really has it all. Planning to see more of the island than just Calvi? Bounce offers guides and luggage storage services in nearby Corsican cities like Bastia, Ajaccio, and Morosaglia, so you'll never have to use unreliable train station lockers again.
