About Durham Train Station

Although the Durham Train Station is small, it serves almost 83,000 passengers every year. The station, which is in downtown Durham, North Carolina, has two passenger trains, the Piedmont and the Carolinian. Located in the Walker Warehouse of what used to be the Liggett and Myers Complex, the station opened here in 2009. Before that, the trains used an Amshack modular station across the street. 

The building the station is in now was built in 1897 and is on the National Register of Historic Buildings. The decorative brickwork, like mousetoothing and corbeled pendants, attracts many historians and architecture enthusiasts as well as passengers. Much of the traffic at the train station are students from the nearby Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

Since there is not much more than a few seating areas, baggage checking, ticket counters, and restrooms, you will have to head out to the City of Durham to entertain yourself while you wait for your train to arrive. Visit one of the malls, museums, or parks in town. If you like to hike, the American Tobacco Trail is almost 23 miles that meanders along the old railroad bed. 

Fun Fact: The barcode was developed by George Laurer in Durham’s Research Triangle Park, and the first item to be scanned was a 10-pack of Juicy Fruit Gum. That gum is now on display at the Smithsonian.  

Things to do at Durham Train Station

Luggage Storage Near Museum of Life and Science

Less than 10 minutes from the station on West Murray Avenue, the Museum of Life and Science has 84 acres to explore and enjoy. The interactive science park has a science center with two floors, a butterfly house, and many outdoor exhibits as well. The outside area is a sanctuary for more than 60 animals that are endangered or threatened. See the endangered red wolves, lemurs, and black bears rescued from dangerous situations. Check out the dinosaur trail, learn how humans have changed the planet, and even go behind the scenes for more interesting information. Stop in at the Sprout Café or Elements Coffee bar for a snack and grab some souvenirs from the Elements Museum Store or the Gizmo Garage. Luggage Storage Near Eno River Park

If you want to get closer to nature, head over to the Eno River Park on North Roxboro Street about 15 minutes from the station. The 200-acre park area has miles of trails along the river and through the forests and hills of the Eno River Valley. The historic area has buildings and landmarks that have been around since the 1700s. The remains of an old mill is one of the interesting places along the paths as well as the Duke Homestead, Museum of Durham History, and Bennet Place. The Hugh Mangum Museum of Photography features thousands of photos as well as his photography equipment. The conservation area has over 7,400 acres of space along the Eno River to enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, and boating. Be sure to leave your suitcases with one of our Bounce partners before going. You cannot bring them into the museums, and you don’t want to drag them along the trails. 

Luggage Storage Near NCCU Art Museum

For art lovers, the NCCU Art Museum on Fayetteville Street is the place to go. The museum began in 1924 when the North Carolina State Art Society was formed. What started as 75 paintings has turned into a museum full of rich art and history to enjoy. The permanent collection that you can see anytime includes thousands of pieces from the Renaissance to the 19th century. Some of the works you can view include Jewish ceremonial items, Oceanic art, Ancient American works, Egyptian funerary art, sculptures, and vases from all over. The museum also boasts 164 acres with more than a dozen sculptures outside along the restored landscape of the park. Don’t forget to get your camera out of your bag before leaving it at one of our Bounce locations. There are plenty of photo ops to be had.
