How to get to Portoferraio
You can easily ride the ferry to Portoferraio from Piombino. The ride to Portoferraio costs different amounts, depending on which option you choose. Things to do near Portoferraio
Forte Falcone
Forte Falcone dates from the 16th and 18th centuries. You can head up to this fort to get amazing panoramic views of the city from the fort's vantage point. where you'll have views over the Tuscan Archipelago's largest island. The fort itself can be toured and you can climb Fort Stella Tower and the Linguella Tower to get different views during your visit. The fort used to be protected by a drawbridge and it was the main defense point for the entire city.
There is an exhibit here dedicated to Napoleon and his time on Elba Island as a prisoner, as well as information about the fort itself in another exhibition.
Napoleonic museums
There are actually a few different museums dedicated to Napoleon on Elba Island. There are the Napoleonic residences, which have been turned into museums that you can tour, and there is also a Napoleonic Antiques Museum which offers you further insight into the life and times of the famous man who was imprisoned on the island near the end of his life. The residences are truly beautiful and have parklands all around them that are as impressive as the exhibits inside.
Villa dei Mulini and the Villa in San Martino are the two homes that many tourists come to see. You will be able to see Napoleon's belongings here as well as preserved furniture and displays about his daily life.
The museum offers you the chance to see some beautiful artifacts taken from Napoleon's homes after his death. His death mask is also on display here.
