Store Your Luggage Around Fremantle With Bounce

The port city of Fremantle is a suburb of Perth and is best known for its history as a British penal colony. Commonly called Freo by locals, Fremantle’s location made it an ideal port for ships coming to Australia to drop off and pick up goods. The city also hosted the 1987 America’s Cup Challenge, commonly called the Auld Mug, a yacht race. One of the most well-known places in Fremantle is the Fremantle Prison, which operated from the 1850s until it closed in 1991.

Stroll through Fremantle and check out some of the National Trust Heritage buildings. Pull up a stool in a local pub and have a pint or sit down to a leisurely meal at one of the seaside cafes or restaurants. Foodies will rejoice over the number of international restaurants throughout the city. While you are in Fremantle, hit the shops and boutiques in the area when you are looking for unique, fun, and creative gifts for loved ones back home. Stop by the Round House, the oldest building in Fremantle. This 12-sided building is truly a sight to see. Museums

Get out and experience Fremantle as the locals do, with a few interesting landmarks and points of interest that grab your attention. Fremantle is filled with interesting sights where you can learn about the history of the city. Pop into a museum to participate in interactive exhibits. Reach out to touch history as it comes to life before your eyes.

  • Fremantle Prison: Frequently referred to as the Fremantle Jail or Fremantle Gaol, this former Australian prison sits on just over 14 acres. Take a guided tour through the cellblocks, along the perimeter walls and through the gatehouse and cottages. Then follow your guide through the tunnels beneath the prison. Learn about the 1988 prison riot where guards were taken hostage, and the prison was set on fire. The prison was originally built to house convicts that were transported from Britain but was handed over to the Australian government in 1886. It officially closed in 1991 when the Casuarina Prison was opened.
  • WA Maritime Museum: This amazing waterfront museum looks out over the Indian Ocean and is home to several exhibits showcasing Fremantle’s history and present. Visit some of the most iconic ships in Australia, such as the Australia II, the yacht that won the America’s Cup, and the submarine Parry Endeavour. Wander through the museum and be amazed at the items that have been discovered from several shipwrecks just off the coast. Be sure to take the submarine tour, which will take you deep below the ocean’s surface to one of those shipwrecks.
  • The Round House: Built in 1830, this is the first permanent building that was built in what is now Fremantle. Fremantle now sits where the Swan River Colony was established, and the Round House was built as a primitive jail. The building has had many uses through the years, including housing for the Water Police, a police lock-up, and a storage warehouse. It was restored and opened for tours where visitors can stroll through looking at the records of the building, along with artifacts and photographs.

Shopping

Take an afternoon or two and hit the cute shops, chic boutiques, and thriving shopping malls. Retail therapy is a real thing, and even when on vacation is a necessity for some. Fashionistas will love shopping for the latest fashions, whereas bargain shoppers will find the thrill of the search exhilarating. Comb through the shops for that perfect gift or special something to remember your time in Fremantle.

  • Fremantle Market: Located at the corner of Henderson Street and South Terrace, the Fremantle Market has over 150 different shops. Craftsmen and merchants display their wares in decorated shop windows, designers offer the latest and greatest fashion trends, and food vendors offer everything from fresh produce to baked goods to tasty snacks.
  • Woolstores: This smaller shopping center has a variety of shops and stores where you can find specialty items, beauty products, and shop at the Coles supermarket. Drop by one of the beauty salons at the mall and update your look or enjoy a manicure. Grab a delicious meal at the Japanese restaurant or pick up a refreshing drink at the food court.
  • The Piazza: Located inside one of the amazing historic buildings of downtown Fremantle, the Piazza is home to several quaint shops and small businesses. Spend a morning or afternoon strolling through the Piazza and enjoy the ingenuity of many artisans who have shops here. Stop by the food court for a quick bite or refreshing drink.

Dining

You will find pretty much any type of cuisine when you visit Fremantle, whether it is local fare, authentic Italian, spicy Mexican, or comforting American. Step outside your comfort zone and give dishes a try that you would typically avoid. You may just discover a new favorite.

  • Local Cuisine: Many eateries in Australia do offer vegan and vegetarian options, and Duck Duck Bruce is no exception. Meat lovers will also find several flavorful dishes. This café is also dog friendly, so do not be surprised to see someone’s canine companion lounging by their feet while they eat. The quirky names of their dishes will leave you in stitches. Be sure to try the Tower of Power or the This Little Piggy Went To Market when you visit. You will not be disappointed.
  • Seafood: Fresh seafood abounds in Fremantle where fish and chips is a staple in most seafood restaurants. Check out Kailis’ Fish Market Café. Seafood meets barbeque in imaginative dishes that will keep you coming back for more. Finish your meal with a unique but very tasty gelato.
