This shrine is said to have been founded in 757 CE. It is dedicated to Amaterasu and Susanoo. The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival takes place each year at the shrine as well. The largest otafuku mask in Japan is housed inside the shrine and many people come to the fountain on the shrine's grounds to pray for eternal youth. The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival takes place from the 1st to the 15th of July each year and includes parades through the streets with beautiful floats.

Canal City Hakata

This large local shopping mall offers a canal that flows through the center of the building as well as a theater and lots of shops and places to eat. The theater hosts shows like musicals and the tickets are affordable for performances here. This is the ideal place to get souvenirs for people at home or to enjoy a few hours of retail therapy at unique boutique shops. Even if you are not that interested in shopping during your vacation, the mall here is a full experience that anyone can enjoy.

Sumiyoshi Shrine

This beautiful open-air shrine has lots of lovely scenery, as well as a bit of peace and quiet inside of the city center. Active worshippers are always present at this location, so you will need to be respectful and quiet as you visit this area. The Sumiyoshi statue is very impressive and there are places to buy amulets and trinkets for protection within the complex as well. There are a couple of different local festivals that are held at this shrine as well, so if your timing is good you might be able to participate in these activities during your visit.
