About Taksim Square
Taksim Square is a main hub and leisure area for locals as well as tourists in the European section of Istanbul, Turkey. Considered to be the heart of modern Istanbul, Taksim Square is home to the Republic Monument that has been in the center of the square since 1923. It is a commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Turkey.
The square is also well-known for its nightlife, eateries, shopping, and cultural venues. You can also find hotels, an opera house, theaters, the Ataturk Cultural Center, and the principal metro station. The beautiful Art Nouveau and Neoclassical 19th century buildings give the area a metropolitan character where you can get a bunch of awesome selfies.
Taksim Square is in the District of Beyoglu. There is always something going on here, such as live music, bazaars, and get-togethers. There are quite a few parks in the area, including the popular Yildiz Park on Palanga Street and Gezi Park on Mete Street. While most of the major attractions are on Istiklal Street, you’ll find unique shops and cafés on many of the smaller streets and alleyways. Explore the area to find these tiny treasures where you can get one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts.
Fun Fact: The name Taksim means distribution and was given to the area where the main water lines branched out to the rest of the city.

Located on Kariye Mahallesi just 20 minutes from Taksim Square, the Chora Museum is housed in Chora Church, which was built in the 14th century. This fantastic art museum is well-known for its murals and mosaics, with stunning examples of Roman paintings as well. The right wall in the narthex has scenes from the Old Testament and Bible, including the life of the Virgin Mary, among others. The ceiling and walls of the dome are adorned with paintings of the Temple of Solomon, the fight with archangel Michael, Jacob’s ladder, and Mary with Christ on her lap. You’ll also see the Dormition of Mary, the Bread Miracle of Jesus Christ, and the Scene of Anastasis. The floor is even decorated with high-quality marble artistry. Luggage Storage Near Miniaturk Park
You have to see this park with miniaturized Turkish landmarks on Imrahor Street about 20 minutes from Taksim Square. The park has 135 models, including 13 from the Ottoman Territory, 60 from Anatolia, and 62 from Istanbul. All the models are one-quarter of their original size and so detailed they look like the real things. On one side, you can find natural formations such as Hoodoos (fairy chimneys) and the Pamukkale (Cotton Castle). The other side has sculptures, mansions, palaces, castles, churches, mosques, piers, bridges, and much more. Take a guided tour or use your phone to use the audio guide as you explore and enjoy. Take a train ride, watch an outdoor show, or see the mini-stadium. Grab a bite to eat at the café or restaurant and don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs for the folks back home. Luggage Storage Near the Galata Tower
Only 15 minutes away, the Galata Tower on Bereketzade is a 219-foot tower, built in 1348. It was first called the Tower of Christ and was used as a lookout for defending the Genoese village of Galata. Until the 1960s, the lofty tower was used as a fire lookout until it became a tourist attraction. The upper floors have panorama balconies where you can get some spectacular photos of the city. Get a window seat at the restaurant in the upper tower to check out the view while you eat. There is also a shop where you can get some souvenirs of your trip. The scenery from the tower, as well as the tower itself, are perfect photo ops, so bring along your phone or camera.
