About the airport

Kathmandu Airport is the biggest in the country of Nepal, and with its tabletop runway adjacent to a precipice, could hardly be more dramatic. Since 1949, this airport has been the central aviation hub of this mountainous country, and these days is often the starting point of a journey to Mount Everest and the top of the world.

In 1950, the airport was the scene of an important event in Nepalese history when the king flew from here to Delhi in India to sign the Delhi Accord and bring democracy to the country. The airport is still named after this king, Tribhuvan, today.

To keep up with demand, a new terminal building was constructed in 2016. The airport and its runways were also renovated in 2020, and in 2022, the airport extended its domestic terminal to service airline Buddha Air.

In other words, this is an airport that is very much on the rise. As the main gateway to the fascinating country of Nepal, Kathmandu Airport is only going from strength to strength.

How to get to Kathmandu from Kathmandu Airport

Bus

The airport is only located around five kilometers from the center of town, but don't expect the public transportation options here that you will find in big airports around the world.

There is no rail connection between the airport and the city it serves, so the only way to travel from one to the other is by road.

If you're looking to take public transportation, the bus is your only option. Sajha Yatayat is the bus company that operates the city's bus routes, and they run buses from the airport to the center of Kathmandu and Lalitpur.

However, they are not the only game in town. They also have private shuttle buses that park at the airport's main gate, around 500 meters from the terminal. Generally, these buses are more expensive than the city bus, but they sometimes offer a better schedule or more comfortable vehicles, so it's an option worth considering.

Taxi

Of course, if you're in a hurry or just want to treat yourself, there are also taxi services available to bring you from the airport into town and vice versa. The drive is quite short, only taking around five minutes without traffic, and the cost is relatively low. You can usually get a taxi into the city for around 5 to 8 US dollars, though of course, it will depend on traffic conditions when you make the journey.

Things to do near Kathmandu Airport

Pashupatinath Temple

Just a short drive from the airport, Pashupatinath Temple stands as a magnificent example of Hindu architecture and spirituality. This sacred site, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is not only a place of worship but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore the temple's extensive grounds, observe ancient rituals, and even participate in traditional ceremonies.

The serene banks of the Bagmati River offer a peaceful retreat, where one can witness the holy Sadhus meditating. Photography is allowed, but respect for the site's religious significance and the privacy of worshippers is paramount. Pashupatinath provides a profound cultural immersion, making it a must-visit for those interested in the spiritual heritage of Nepal.

Pashupatinath Temple bag policy

Ultimately, this is still a functioning temple and is not designed as a tourist attraction. Therefore, you can't bring big bags inside, and on-site luggage storage is extremely limited. Luckily, Bounce provides the best Kathmandu backpacker's luggage storage so you can leave your things behind and explore this deeply spiritual place for yourself.

Boudhanath Stupa

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Boudhanath Stupa, is one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal and the world. Located just a few kilometers from the airport, it's an ideal spot for those looking to experience the essence of Tibetan Buddhism without straying far from their point of arrival or departure.

The area around the stupa is lined with monasteries, shops selling religious artifacts, and cafes offering local and international cuisine. Visitors can join the locals in performing kora, a meditative walk around the stupa, spinning the prayer wheels for good fortune. The site is particularly enchanting during the early mornings and late afternoons when prayers and rituals are performed. Boudhanath is not just a religious site; it's a vibrant community hub that welcomes everyone with open arms.

You can bring your bags with you if you want, but since one of the best things to do here is just wander around, it may not be a good idea. Bounce provides the best luggage storage Kathmandu has to offer, so take advantage of our luggage storage options to store your luggage safely and enjoy this magical location.

The Garden of Dreams

A tranquil oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, the Garden of Dreams is a neoclassical historical garden located approximately six kilometers from the airport. This meticulously restored garden offers a serene escape with its lush landscapes, pavilions, fountains, and a variety of flora. It's the perfect spot for a stroll, reading a book, or simply enjoying a moment of peace. The garden also houses a museum and a cafe where visitors can indulge in a cup of coffee or a meal while admiring the surroundings. When you need a break, this is definitely a place to consider.

Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square, situated at the heart of the capital, is a mere five kilometers from the airport and offers a fascinating glimpse into Nepal's rich history. This historic square is surrounded by spectacular architecture, temples, and courtyards dating back to the Malla and Shah dynasties. Highlights include the Hanuman Dhoka Palace, the Taleju Temple, and the House of the Living Goddess Kumari. Visitors can explore the museums within the square to learn more about Nepal's monarchy and the local culture. While the 2015 earthquake did damage some of the square's structures, restoration efforts have been underway, and the site remains a captivating attraction for history buffs and cultural enthusiasts alike.
