About Leeds Station

Leeds is the third busiest railway station in the UK outside of London. Serving an impressive 30 million passengers a year, the station is an important part of the country's railway infrastructure. It provides a link not only to the north of England but also to Scotland. This makes it the busiest station in the north of England. With 17 platforms and a huge amount of shops, cafés, bars, and supermarkets, Leeds Station is almost a miniature city in itself.

The Industrial Revolution was born in the north of England, and so the railways came to Leeds early. The first station in the city was built in 1834. Another station was opened in 1854, and the third, known as New Station, opened in 1869. This station eventually became Leeds City railway station in 1938 and remains the main station in the city today.

The station underwent a major redesign in 1967, and then another in 2002. A new glass roof was installed to provide greater light to the platforms, and the shopping area was significantly redesigned. As a result, this very old train station feels quite modern as it continues to serve the city and the region.
