About Luxembourg

Luxembourg City is the capital of the compact Western European country of Luxembourg. This sparkling city is a hub of commerce and EU politics and attracts travelers from all over the globe.

Luxembourg’s winding streets sprawl where the Petrusse and Alzette rivers meet in the country’s southern region. Luxembourg transit options are plentiful, and public transportation services, including trams and buses, are free. Pedestrian and bicycle travel are simple, too; it’s easy to reach parks and green spaces, shops, governmental centers, cozy cafes, and fine-dining venues.

One of Europe’s top destinations, Luxembourg is home to multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites, centuries-old structures, and an array of museums. Natural and cultural attractions are abundant, and guided tours of Luxembourg’s top sights are offered.

Some of Europe’s most popular cities are within proximity to Luxembourg. Paris is just a two-hour train ride west, and the picture-perfect city of Metz, France is less than an hour’s ride south.

Due to the country’s small size, Luxembourg culture and cuisines have roots in Germany and France; nearly half of the Luxembourg workers reside outside of the country.

Fun Fact: Many Luxembourg natives speak Luxembourgish, French, German, and English.

Attractions and Activities near Luxembourg

  • Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art: Often referred to as “Mudam,” this museum holds some of the best contemporary art in Europe. Sporting clean lines and stark walls amid the city’s oldest sites, the structure itself is a spectacle. Pieces by world-famous artists, including Andy Warhol and Daniel Buren, are on display here. Rotating exhibits are frequent, so each visit’s sure to be unique. Join a guided tour, and you can gain excellent insight into the Mudam’s most popular exhibits.
  • Mullerthal Trail: Luxembourg hiking is second to none; its trail systems span hundreds of miles and various terrains. The Mullerthal Trail is one of Luxembourg’s best trails; it’s split into three routes, with some side treks in between. Pack up your gear, drop the rest of your bags at a Luxembourg luggage storage location, and start your hike in Echternach, near the country’s northeastern border with Germany. The path runs along the Sûre River, through vast valleys, and past a historic castle. Take a detour on the trail’s ExtraTour B, and you’ll see some of the region’s famous sandstone cliffs.
  • Luxembourg City History Museum: In the city’s old town district, this six-story structure houses dozens of exhibits highlighting Luxembourg’s past. The museum utilizes various mediums to tell the story of the city, with interactive, modern technologies, small-scale models, fine art, and ancient objects. Visitors can learn about medieval times, the city’s industrial age, the role Luxembourg played during world wars, and what the future might hold for this capital city.
  • Grand Ducal Palace: In Luxembourg’s center, this palatial residence is dripping in elegance, and this place has seen some things. Built in the 1500s, the structure served as a center of government for two centuries. During World War II, the palace was used as a Nazi concert hall. Upon the war’s resolution, the palace was transformed into the stately site that it is today. Due to its ongoing status as a center for governmental operations and private residence of the Grand Duke, most viewing will have to be done outside its intricately-carved doors. Visitors may also have the opportunity to watch a changing of the guards ceremony. Guided tours of the interior are offered during peak times and provide access to the palace’s best inside features.
