About Downtown Montréal
Some say that downtown Montréal is the true heart of the city and is an absolute must-see when visiting Montréal. This busy hub of activity is home to McGill and Concordia Universities, as well as multiple office complexes and shopping centers. Spend an afternoon walking through downtown and marvel at the new buildings seamlessly mixing with the old city buildings creating an eclectic skyline that only Montréal can pull off. Often called Centre-Ville de Montréal, downtown Montréal is home to the McCord Museum, the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, and Chinatown with its ornate Chinese gates, authentic shops, and eateries.
Head down Crescent Street and check out the many bars. Sign up for a pub crawl to enjoy some of the microbrews offered at many of the bars along this street. Stroll along Rue Sainte-Catherine and enjoy window shopping or browsing the racks at some small boutiques, chain stores, and malls. Be sure to spend some time in the Underground City, a network of pedestrian walkways that easily take you through the city. There are over 1,700 different businesses located along these walkways, creating an underground city. There are 155 different street entrances from the underground city, making it easily accessible.
Fun Fact: Unlike Toronto, Montréal does not have an overabundance of skyscrapers. There is a law in place that prohibits a building from being taller than Mount Royal, so the skyline preserves the aesthetically pleasing view of the mountain.

This natural science museum is located on the McGill University downtown campus and offers an assortment of rather odd curiosities ranging from shrunken heads to mummies and dinosaur bones. The Redpath Museum was a gift to McGill University from Peter Redpath, a sugar baron, and was completed in 1882. While the layout of the exhibits may seem a bit helter-skelter, each exhibit has a purpose in portraying the natural history of not only Montréal but the entire world. Gawk at giant crabs and dinosaur skeletons and learn about the mummification process used in ancient Egypt. Spend the day wandering through the museum on your own learning about the various cultures and time periods or ask for a student guide to lead you through the various exhibits. There will be plenty to catch your interest while you explore the Redpath Museum.
