Phnom Penh City Guide

Top Things to Do

The unique Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh has an abundance of attractions and activities to keep you occupied during your stay. From learning more about the Khmer heritage and culture to trying out the local cuisine, here are some of the top thins to do in Phnom Penh.

Museums

For a slice of Khmer history, Phnom Penh has a multitude of historically-significant museums to check out. These museums give a clearer picture of city’s history and background – including both the good and the bad.

  • National Museum of Cambodia: Found within a beautiful garden, the National Museum of Cambodia is one of the city’s main attractions. What the museum lacks in size, it more than makes up for with its wonderful collection of traditional and ancient artifacts curated from different parts of the world, such as artworks and stone carvings. The museum is also home to the biggest Khmer art collection, which includes sculptures, ethnographic items and ceramics. (Bag policy: Guests are required to deposit large bags or luggage in the museum’s cloakroom. A safer and more convenient alternative would be to store your things at a Bounce location before your visit.
  • Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum: Cambodia went through a dark and horrific period under the Khmer Rouge regime and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum gives you a glimpse into this tragic time. Located on the site of a former high school which was turned into a political prisoners’ camp, known as Security Prison 21, the site was mainly untouched since it was first discovered in 1979. Guests of the museum can view the small brick cells, torture tools and blood splattered walls to give you an idea of what the prisoners went through. A visit here is truly eye-opening and not for the faint of heart. (Bag policy: Large bags and luggage are prohibited inside the museum. Alternatively, you can leave your things with Bounce before your tour of the museum.)
  • The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda: The symbol of the Kingdom of Cambodia, The Royal Palace functions as the home of the King and is occasionally used as a venue for court ceremonies, with a few sections open for public viewing. Found south of the Palace and within the compound is the Silver Pagoda, a temple-museum which houses several national treasures, including jeweled Buddha statues, ancient art, gold ornaments. (Bag policy: Since it is a temple, the facility imposes some strict rules regarding carrying of large bags and other items. To avoid inconvenience, locate a Bounce partner and temporarily store your things there.)

Shopping

Shopping in Phnom Penh is an attraction in itself; your retail experience will likely involve a visit to local markets and plenty of haggling for bargains. To get a taste of authentic Khmer shopping, visit the following areas:

  • Street 240: Located just behind the royal palace, Street 240 is a pleasant street lined with shops and food stalls found within French colonial houses. Here, you’ll encounter a good mix of souvenir shops, quaint boutique, fashion stores, and locally-made goods. This is one of the best places in Phnom Penh to snag some textiles, fabrics and jewelry.
  • Central Market (Phsar Thmei): More than just a retail spot, the Central Market is also considered a landmark of the city. House in an Art Deco-style building, the market has been around since 1937 and is arguably Phnom Penh’s most renowned shopping destination. You can find just about anything being sold here – from artworks and Buddha statues to shoes, clothes and gadgets.
  • Russian Market (Tuol Tom Pong Market): One of the most interesting shopping spots in Phnom Penh, the “Russian Market” got its moniker during the 1980s with its high concentration of Russians staying in the area. This is an incredible place to get good deals on Cambodian scarves, antiques, lamps, paintings, jewelry, souvenirs and even motorbike parts. There’s also a nearby food court where you can grab some local street food after a long day of shopping and haggling.

Dining

The dining scene in Phnom Penh is diverse; it encompasses various dishes and flavors from all over the world. Despite being the oldest food culture in Southeast Asia, Cambodia’s culinary heritage became lost during the 70s, which is why it’s not as popular as other Asian cuisine. Fortunately, the new generation of restaurants are gradually putting the Khmer cuisine back on the map. Here are some of the must-try dining spots in Phnom Penh.

  • Khmer food: When in the city, it only makes to try Khmer food. The local cuisine draws influence from other Asian cuisines such as Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese and Indian. Some of the best Khmer restaurant in Phnom Penh are Eleven One Kitchen, Malis Restaurant, Romdeng Restaurant, Friends the Restaurant and NESAT Seafood House.
  • Asian food: Phnom Penh has no shortage of excellent Asian restaurants found all over the city. The best Asian joints to try here are Dimsum Emperors and Chinese Noodle Restaurant for Chinese food; The Sushi Bar, Sesame Noodle Bar and Kanji for Japanese; Boat Noodle Restaurant for Thai food; and Taste Budz and Angkor India Restaurant for Indian favorites.
  • Western cuisine: Phnom Penh has a huge expat community and the city has a number of quality restaurants that cater to the Western taste. Some of the most famous Western restaurants in the city are Topaz (French), Bouchon Wine Bar (French), Piccolo Italia Da Luigi (Italian), Irina Restaurant (Russian) and Mexicano (Mexican).
