Rijeka is a city with a long maritime history so it's not surprising there's a museum there dedicated to the theme. It's not the only museum in Rijeka by any means and so you'll be able to discover more about Croatian culture, wander through gallery after gallery of contemporary art and even have a smile at a collection of vintage computing equipment.
- Maritime and History Museum – The Maritime and History Museum of the Croatian Coast is housed in an ornate 19th-century palace on the Trg Riccarda Zanelle. There are collections in the museum relating to maritime activities over the centuries as well as archeological artifacts and exhibits pertaining to the Croatian people and their culture. Be prepared to be overawed by the grandeur of the museum's interior. It's as elaborate inside as it is out.
- Peek & Poke – It's easy to forget how rapidly advances in technology are actually made. Remind yourself just how far we've come where computing is concerned by taking a look around Peek & Poke. Peek & Poke is a technology-oriented museum on Ul. Ivana Grohovca that will leave you slightly mind-boggled at what you see there. The museum houses a collection of more than two thousand examples of vintage computer, photography, video, and audio equipment that when you see it will leave you asking, were computers really that big?
- MMA – The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is housed in a spacious renovated warehouse on the Kresimirova ul in the Bencic art district. There are collections of work by Croatian artists spanning three hundred years and a smaller collection of works by international artists. The museum is open six days of the week from midday to seven in the evening. It's closed on a Monday.
Shopping In Rijeka
Shopping in Rijeka is a delightful blend of the old and the new. The city has some fabulous shopping centers, a main street jammed full of unique stores, and a vibrant market you don't need to wait until the weekend to visit.
- Tower Center – The Tower Center is Rijeka's biggest shopping mall and is located on Janka Polic Kamova in the city's Pecine district about one kilometer from the center. This mall has five floors of retail galleries housing over a hundred and twenty stores, many of which carry international brand names. The mall is open for business seven days of the week from nine until nine. The bonus of spending the morning shopping here is that Sablicevo Beach is just a stone's throw away.
- Korzo Street – Korzo Street is the heart of Rijeka and the city's main thoroughfare. The broad pedestrianized boulevard, similar to the Ramblas in Barcelona, is a popular place for strolling and people-watching. On Korzo Street you'll find a selection of boutique-style shops stocking everything from designer label fashion wear to the local rakija liquor.
- City Market – Having a browse around the City Market in Rijeka takes quite a bit longer than five minutes. The market occupies three buildings just off Korzo Street near the Modello Palace. The market is open seven days of the week from seven in the morning until one in the afternoon. If you want to get the best fresh produce going you have to get there early or it'll all be gone.

There's a very international food scene in Rijeka so you don't have to stick to local food unless you particularly want to. That said though, it's definitely worth giving it a try as Croatian food is based around healthy Mediterranean ingredients such as seafood, beans, rice, and fresh vegetables.
- Borik Taverna– The Borik Taverna is a restaurant on Divizije that specializes in classic seafood and Croatian dishes. It's a rustic place and has a tree-shaded patio with a super sea view. Here you can tuck into a plateful of giant Adriatic shrimp, fresh squid, or a mixed fish grill that will keep you busy for a week. They also serve typical Croatian meat dishes like lamb and potato stew and vegetable risotto.
- Bistro Mornar – The Bistro Mornar is a taverna-style restaurant on Ul Riva Boduli near the Modello Palace with a family-friendly atmosphere. Here you can dine under the arched ceiling at a table covered with a red-checked cloth on fish soup, salted cod mousse, shark steak, or local grilled meatballs for ridiculously low prices.
- Cona d'oro – This very rustic and eclectic restaurant on the Kruzna ul is renowned in Rijeka for its homemade burgers and pizzas. This is the food joint to drop into if you're craving a pulled pork burger, a generous steak tartare, a plate of pasta, and a big slice of chocolate cake to finish off with. It's not posh, the food isn’t fancy, but it's simple, tasty and good.
