The striking Art Nouveau façade of Gare de Rouen, also known as Rouen-Rive-Droit, has been a feature of this charming French city since 1928 when it replaced the previous station dating back to 1847. As one of the major cities in Normandy in the north of France, Rouen is well-connected to several cities throughout the country, including a high-speed TGV connection that links the station with legendary destinations like Versailles, Lyon, and Marseille. That makes this historic town relatively easy to reach from just about anywhere in France, and even beyond.
And thanks to a fairly central location close to the historic heart of town with its Gothic architecture, it's not hard to explore Rouen almost as soon as you arrive at the station. Dating back to the 13th century, the tower is particularly notable for having once imprisoned legendary French female warrior Joan of Arc. The tower also features an escape game, along with other immersive experiences that involve costumed interpreters guiding you through the turbulent history of the castle and the city. All in all, it's one of the best places in the city center to get in touch with the rich history of the region, and it's an attraction that should be at the top of anybody's list of things to do in Rouen.

Getting around Rouen from Gare de Rouen

Rouen may not be a coastal town, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a proud maritime history. Located on the river Seine, Rouen has been a major center of trade in France for centuries, and you can learn more about this rich history at the city's Maritime Museum.
There are a couple of different ways to reach the museum from Rouen train station. For example, you can walk from the station to Theatre des Arts Metro station in around 17 minutes, then take line T1 to Luciline station. From there, it's another 14-minute walk to the museum.
If that sounds like too much walking for you, you can find Gare Rue Verte just a couple of hundred meters from Rouen train station. From there, you can take the Metro to Theatre des Arts. Once you're there, walk a couple of hundred meters to the Gare Routiere or bus station and catch number 530 to Mont-Riboudet. That will leave you with a walk of about 13 minutes to the museum itself. All in all, this journey will take a little over half an hour, depending on how quickly you can make the necessary connections.
Currently, a single trip on either Metro or bus costs €1.70 for an adult. The ticket is valid for one hour, so you can make multiple transfers within that time. However, if you plan to take public transport a lot, a 24-hour card valid on the Metro and the bus network is only five euros and may be a better bet.
Rouen Botanical Garden
If you would rather get a taste of nature and take a break in some beautiful surroundings while exploring the city, Rouen Botanical Garden is the perfect place to go. Getting to the botanical garden from Rouen train station couldn't be much easier. Walk a couple of hundred meters from the train station to Gare-Rue Verte, then take the Metro to Europe station.
