About Santa Lucia Station

The Santa Lucia station is a railway station located in Santiago, the capital of the South American nation of Chile. It is an underground station that serves for Santiago Metro, the city’s main railway system, and is nestled between the Universidad de Chile and Universidad Catolica stations. The etymology of the station’s name is due to its location on the southern side of Santa Lucia Hill. In 1541, the conqueror Pedro de Valdivia discovered Santiago on the bottom of a hill. He decided to rename the hill as Santa Lucia to pay respects to Christian martyr Saint Lucy.

The Santa Lucia station was established on March 31, 1977, as a part of the extension of the La Moneda to Salvador line. Situated on Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins, the station’s location is central and has a mix of educational, residential, and business areas and receives a steady flow of passengers, with an increase in numbers during the rush hours of morning and afternoon. The station is also a gateway to some of Santiago’s finest landmarks and attractions such as the Santa Lucia Hill and the National Library of Chile, which are all a short walk away from the station.

Fun fact: One of the first artworks to be displayed in the station is the Azulejos Para Santiago and was given by the government of Portugal.
