About Sarajevo

Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital, Sarajevo, is the country's largest city and cultural center. The city sits within a valley, encircled by the beautiful Dinaric Alps. Sarajevo is known for its cosmopolitan population and diverse architecture. Sarajevo is also Bosnia and Herzegovina's main transport hub, with Sarajevo International Airport connecting the capital to destinations around the world.

The area that's now Sarajevo has been settled since the Neolithic period. While Sarajevo has been ruled by several empires over its history, it only became a significant administrative center under the Ottoman Empire. Sarajevo is well-known for being where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, which sparked the start of World War I. Sarajevo was badly damaged in the 1990s as a result of the Bosnian War but has since recovered.

Today, Sarajevo is one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe, offering a unique blend of culture unlike anywhere else on the continent.

  • Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque: The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is one of Sarajevo's most famous historic buildings. The mosque is the largest in Bosnia and Herzegovina and was built in the 16th century by the Ottoman Empire. Unfortunately, the original Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque was badly damaged during the Bosnian War and had to undergo major renovations. Located at the center of the city, Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque was integral to the development of Sarajevo as a city. The mosque features Classical Ottoman architecture, including a minaret tower and vast domed ceilings.
  • Trebević: Sarajevo has plenty of nearby mountains, and the most popular with tourists and locals is Trebević. Standing at over 5,300 feet, Trebević is the closest mountain to Sarajevo. One of the best ways to experience Trebević is by taking the cable car, which runs up the mountainside from Sarajevo's old town. If you're looking for an adventure, head to Brus recreation center, and hike to the summit. The ascent from Brus is around 1,600 feet, and the trails are well-worn and easy to follow. From atop Trebević, you'll have sweeping views of Sarajevo and the surrounding range.
Brus also provides some fun activities, including paintball, volleyball, and ATV rentals. Another superb place to visit on the slopes of Trebević is Sunnyland, an amusement park that contains the thrilling Alpine Coaster. Both these places have restaurants, in case you get peckish after your trek. You won't want to lug any heavy belongings up Trebević, so check in at a Sarajevo luggage storage service before visiting.
  • Baščaršija: This historic marketplace is considered the center of culture in Sarajevo. The market dates back to around the 15th century, and during its peak, was one of the economic centers of the Balkans, with over 12,000 stores. Today, the Baščaršija is smaller, with around 200 stores selling everything from local delicacies to handmade souvenirs. While strolling through this bustling bazaar, you'll pass by several historic buildings, including the Old Synagogue, the Emperor's Mosque, and the Sarajevo City Hall. This array of religious buildings mixed with local artisans is a perfect example of Sarajevo's diversity and is a must-see while visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital. You won't want to carry any large bags through this hectic market, so swing by a luggage storage service in Sarajevo before you shop.
