About Sarajevo
Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital, Sarajevo, is the country's largest city and cultural center. The city sits within a valley, encircled by the beautiful Dinaric Alps. Sarajevo is known for its cosmopolitan population and diverse architecture. Sarajevo is also Bosnia and Herzegovina's main transport hub, with Sarajevo International Airport connecting the capital to destinations around the world.
The area that's now Sarajevo has been settled since the Neolithic period. Sarajevo is well-known for being where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, which sparked the start of World War I. Sarajevo was badly damaged in the 1990s as a result of the Bosnian War but has since recovered.
Today, Sarajevo is one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe, offering a unique blend of culture unlike anywhere else on the continent.
