About Torremolinos

Looking at modern Torremolinos, it's strange to think that within living memory, the city was basically just a sleepy fishing village like many others along the coast. The destiny of the region changed forever in the late 1950s when mass tourism began. Torremolinos was the first resort to be developed on the Costa del Sol, and it remains the most popular to this day. Nowadays, Torremolinos has a population of around 70,000, and it receives tens of thousands of foreign visitors every year. It also has a thriving expatriate community mostly made up of British and Scandinavian residents looking for a place to retire in the sun.

Despite its modern appearance, Torremolinos has ancient roots. Founded by the Phoenicians, it became a Roman town, then was conquered by the Moors. It was during the Moorish period that mills were built around the town, giving it the name Torremolinos, or 'tower of the mills'. Throughout its history, Torremolinos was vulnerable to pirate attacks, and in the 18th century, its population was as low as 106 people. The town began to grow again with industrialization, but the mills went into decline in the 1920s.

When Hotel Pez Espada opened in 1960, it changed the town forever. With the abundant sunshine and beautiful scenery of the coast, Torremolinos quickly became popular with British holidaymakers. The first gay bar in Spain was opened here in 1962. With the fall of Franco's dictatorship of Spain in 1975, Torremolinos became even more desirable to tourists. Now, it remains one of Spain's most visited towns.

  • Meet the largest crocodile in Europe at the Crocodile Park. Big Daddy weighs over 1,300 pounds and is one of the most famous of the 300 crocodiles that live in this park. Watch the handlers feed the crocs or have your photo taken with a baby crocodile at this unique attraction.
  • Get in a round of golf at Parador de Malaga. One of the first golf courses on the Costa del Sol, this oceanfront course dates back to 1925 and offers gorgeous coastal views as you play.
