About the station

Nestled in the rolling hills of the French countryside between Paris and Lille, Amiens is an oft-overlooked destination for both local and international travelers. While it rarely comes up on lists of “must-visits,” anyone who wants a comprehensive French experience should look at a city like Amiens. With bucolic surroundings and a wonderful town square, you’ll reach a newfound appreciation for the French lifestyle by experiencing its smaller cities.

With a wonderful Old Town surrounding its marvelous Gothic Cathedrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens and a picturesque riverfront on the Somme, Amiens is as charming as any city in France. The primary transportation hub in Amiens is Gare d'Amiens, which connects the city to Paris, Lille, and the rest of France via SNCF’s Longueau–Boulogne railway. It’s well-situated just a short walk from Old Town, making it an ideal launching point for experiencing Amiens as soon as you arrive.

While Gare Amiens is not a major train station, it’s well-run and offers plenty of amenities. Here’s everything you need to know:

Where can I store my luggage for a few hours in Amiens?

As far as storing your luggage near Gare Amiens and the rest of the city, easily the best Amiens luggage storage option is Bounce. With an intuitive mobile app, you can book luggage storage ahead of time or on the go, and there are dozens of locations throughout Amiens.

Can you store luggage at train stations in France?

It depends entirely on the train station. Gare Amiens has partnered with a third party to offer self-service luggage lockers with baggage storage seals. Space is limited, but you can book ahead of time to see if there is any availability. While the lockers are on site, there are some key features left out, including 24/7 support and mobile access that other luggage storage services tend to offer.

Is it safe to leave luggage at Gare Amiens?

It’s not exactly the safest form of luggage storage in Amiens, but the lockers are fairly secure, and they come with a seal. If you want the safest method, using a left luggage service like Bounce is your best bet. Bounce partners with local shops and vets them to ensure security and reliability. Things to do near Gare Amiens

Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens

This glorious example of Late Gothic architecture has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which speaks not only to its importance to the city of Amiens but also its stature among France’s many amazing historical landmarks. It’s one of the largest churches in France and is widely considered one of the best examples of 13th-century architecture. The most notable feature is its imposing spire that juts out from the rest of the city like a spear. Its towers can also be seen from around Amiens. It’s safe to say you won’t have much difficulty finding the cathedral!

The Jules Verne House

The Maison de Jules Verne is housed in a 19th-century mansion right in the Amiens city center. If you’re not familiar with the legendary French author, he penned classics like "Extraordinary Voyages" during his 18-year stay in Amiens. Even if his literary accomplishments are a mystery to you, the gorgeous house that's been turned into a museum is well worth visiting for its opulent interiors and hundreds of priceless works of art.

Saint-Leu Quarter

Known as the “Little Venice of the North” for its patchwork of little canals radiating out of the Somme, the Saint-Leu Quarter is easily the most distinctive part of Amiens. Originally intended to bolster the commercial output of Amiens, these little canals served the city’s many weavers, dyers, tanners, millers, and other artisans working on the north bank of the Somme. Today, you’ll find a different sort of occupant, with the factories and workshops replaced by delightful cafés, boutiques, antique stores, and other fun places to window shop through. The historical charm remains, as cobbled streets lined with the buildings and houses that maintain their original construction of wattle, brick, and wood. It's a great place to simply walk around and stop into a local shop here and there.

Getting around the city from Gare Amiens

Paris

Amiens Cathedral

One of the best aspects of Gare Amiens is its proximity to the city’s top attraction. The train station is just an 11-minute walk on the cobbled Rue de Noyon onto Rue Victor Hugo. It’s certainly a scenic route and one you're likely to make anyway if you plan to explore the city.

Parc Saint Pierre

While it’s on the other side of the Somme, this beautiful park is only a 17-minute walk via the Boulevard de Beauvillé. You can take a quick taxi or rent a bike through the Buscyclette service, which has a station just outside Gare Amiens.

Aside from venturing all the way to Paris, the sites of Amiens are mostly reachable on foot if you don't mind a walk of up to 20 minutes.
