With a population of nearly 800,000 in the greater metropolitan area, Bordeaux is the 5th largest city in France and the capital of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This is France's best-known wine region, which is saying a lot in a country known for producing some of the world's best vintages. Bordeaux is home to the world's biggest wine fair, and the wine industry contributes over €14 billion every year to the local economy. Wine is a big deal everywhere in France, but nowhere more so than in Bordeaux.
The city of Bordeaux has ancient roots, with settlements found here that date back to the 5th century BC. It was the Romans that introduced wine production to the area, making this a 2,000-year-old tradition in the region. Over the course of its long history, Bordeaux has been conquered by Vandals, Moors, the English, and the French, and each of these successive invasions brought new influences to the city. Bordeaux was even the temporary capital of France during the First and Second World Wars, since German forces threatened Paris.
Nowadays, Bordeaux is one of France's most interesting cities. As well as the wine industry, it is a hub for tech and for tourism, welcoming almost six million tourists per year.
Bordeaux's long warm summers and mild winters are good for more than just wine growing. They also make it a great destination to visit year-round. And even though this is one of France's largest cities, many of the most interesting attractions can be reached on foot as you explore this charming town's heart.
Get unique photos at the Place de la Bourse. Every city in Europe has its central square, but Bordeaux’s is one of the most iconic. Built along the banks of the Garonne river, the elegant old buildings of the square are mirrored in the reflecting pool, making it one of France’s most photographed locations.
Celebrate the lifeblood of Bordeaux at La Cite du Vin. This City of Wine is a unique interactive museum that tells the long story of the local wine culture, from its Roman origins to the multibillion-dollar industry it is today.
Take a pleasant stroll along the Quais du Bordeaux. Recognized for its beauty on the UNESCO World Heritage list, this riverfront stroll is a perfect place to take a walk or bike ride and soak in the atmosphere of the city. You'll also find plenty of cafés and bistros for refreshments along the way where you can sample the local wine and do some people watching.
Breathe some fresh air at the Jardin Public. Opened in 1746, this park was once on the outskirts of the city but has since been engulfed by it. The English-style landscaping offers sweeping lawns, old trees, and a winding pond. This being France, you'll also find an excellent restaurant on site.
Savor the evening against the backdrop of the lights of the Pont de pierre. The Stone Bridge was, for many years, the only crossing of the Garonne river. Now closed to vehicles, it is the perfect place for an evening walk, and is at its best when lit up against the night sky.
Bordeaux has an international airport outside the city. Bus route number one runs from the airport to Place de la Bourse in the heart of the city.
Bordeaux Saint-Jean is the city's main train station, and trains run from here to other cities throughout France and across Europe. The shuttle bus from the airport also calls here.
The city of Bordeaux has an extensive tram network which connects the train station with the major points of interest throughout the city. The bus network is also extensive and easy to navigate.
Bordeaux has many attractions for visitors. But as is often the case with French cities, one of the best things to do in Bordeaux is simply to wander. Much of the city’s charm comes from its elegant and refined atmosphere, and the best way to experience this is on foot.

Cognac: In case wine isn't enough for you, Bordeaux is only a short distance from the small town of Cognac. As the name suggests, this quaint settlement is the birthplace of the iconic French spirit, and large producers such as Remy Martin and Hennessey still maintain a presence here. This was my first time using this service and it worked seamlessly. I had no problems at all dropping my bag off at NYC Racquet Sports and it was just as easy picking it up. This location is a couple blocks from Penn Station, so it was perfect for exploring Manhattan for several hours before catching the train to Newark Airport for a late night flight. Will definitely use this service on future trips!
Really excellent service, right around the corner from A/C/E trains at Penn Station in New York. Popular and busy restaurant, too — but no one kept me waiting to drop off or pick up a bag.
This place is awesome, it’s near Macy’s and other souvenir shops, nearby food outlets too and near the Penn station in New York. This is the best place to leave your luggage for last minute shopping before you head to the airport via Penn station. Plus the Employees are very courteous and kind
