About Cannes Train Station
Cannes Train Station was first built in 1863 as a stop along the Marseilles to Cagnes sur Mer line. As France’s rail network grew, the station grew with it. And as a result, so did the town. Although Cannes itself is quite ancient, it wasn’t until the nineteenth century and the coming of the train that it became more and more popular with wealthy visitors. Combined with its natural harbor, the train station helped to put Cannes on the map of foreign tourists.
Before long, the original station proved inadequate for the popular city. The original station was torn down and replaced with the current Cannes Train Station in 1975. High-speed TGV trains connect Cannes with Paris and with southern French cities such as Marseilles and Nice. It’s also a hub for regional trains that travel along the coast all the way to Ventimiglia in Italy. Plus, the bus station just in front of the train station is a hub for both city and regional buses.
Things to do near Cannes Train Station
Despite its international fame, Cannes isn’t a huge city. The train station sits on the northern edge of the old heart of the city, making it easy to reach most of Cannes’ top attractions on foot. You won’t have to go far from the station to find something worth doing here.
- Take a stroll down Rue d’Antibes to get a feel of the real life of Cannes. With plenty of shops, bistros, and bars, this is a place to mingle with locals as well as visitors and enjoy a more authentic side of the city.
- Splash some cash at La Croisette. Cannes’ reputation as a playground for the rich is well-earned, and this shopping area will test even the most generous budgets. Home to all the major international fashion houses such as Gucci, Prada, and Chanel, it’s a great place to window shop and live like a millionaire.
- See the ancient heart of the city in Le Suquet. This hillside neighborhood has stood for centuries, and is full of interesting restaurants and quaint cobbled streets. Plus, climbing the hill to Place de la Castre will give you an incredible view over the city and the Provence coast.
- Explore one of Cannes’ last remaining medieval buildings at the eleventh-century fort now known as the Musee de la Castre. This ancient fortification has an astonishingly diverse collection of artifacts from the Americas, Asia, and the Arctic.
- Shop like a local at Marche Forville. This market is no tourist attraction but is instead the place where local residents come to buy produce. You’ll find delicacies from all over Provence, and there is no shortage of bars and restaurants surrounding the covered market where you can take a break and watch the world go by.
