About the airport

Düsseldorf, situated on the Rhine River, is one of the largest cities in Germany and a vital piece of the country’s appeal for international travelers. Sure, it doesn’t enjoy the fame of Berlin, Munich, or even its neighbor (and rival) Cologne, but any traveler who’s enjoyed the "longest bar in the world" in Düsseldorf’s Altstadt (Old Town) will tell you to book a trip immediately.

There’s a historic city center lined with bierhalls serving their signature beer, the deliciously malty and smoky altbier, but there’s a contemporary side of this city as well. The beautiful tree-lined Königsallee Boulevard is lined with some of the country’s best boutiques, and the significant student population brings a fantastic bohemian culture if you know where to look.

Most international travelers, especially those from outside Europe, tend to pair a trip to Düsseldorf with visits to nearby Cologne, with the former tending to be a day-trip destination. However, Düsseldorf is well worth dedicating a few days to, especially given the ease of travel via the Düsseldorf Airport (or Flughafen Düsseldorf). Situated just a few miles north of downtown, Düsseldorf’s primary airport makes for a convenient landing spot for exploring the bustling (rowdy might be the better descriptor) city center along the Rhine.

Düsseldorf is not the largest city in the region, but Flughafen Düsseldorf is the largest airport in the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area well-equipped for the significant business travel it handles every year. There are three terminals (and a small executive branch) that handle international flights, EU flights, and non-Schengen European flights. There are multiple train stations connecting the airport with the city center, making it an easy place to travel through.

Is there a place to leave luggage at Dusseldorf International Airport?

The luggage storage Flughafen Düsseldorf offers is relatively reliable when compared to other airports, but it might not always be the most convenient option if you're looking for luggage storage near the city center for a few hours. If you’re on a layover, you can store your luggage (suitcases, bikes, and even athletic equipment) at the airport, provided they have room. Unfortunately, the lockers at Dusseldorf Airport are frequently full.

Do train stations in Germany have luggage storage?

It really depends on the train station. All the major train stations in cities like Munich and Berlin will have baggage storage facilities like lockers. But storing luggage at smaller facilities isn’t always the best option. A luggage storage service is preferable because of the flexibility provided by having multiple locations along with premium features like customer support. You simply won’t find that at a train station.

Does Dusseldorf Hbf have lockers?

Düsseldorf’s central railway station (known as Hauptbahnhof, or Hbf for short) does have luggage lockers that cost between $2 and $8 to store for a day. There is a time limit for these, so you cannot exceed 24 hours of storage, and fines may be assessed for overages.

What are the left luggage services in Düsseldorf?

If you have to store luggage for an entire day or more, you might want the flexibility of having it stored with a service near the city center where you’ll be sightseeing and exploring. Bounce has luggage storage facilities throughout Düsseldorf, making it an easy option. Bounce’s mobile app allows you to find and book luggage storage while you’re planning your trip to Düsseldorf or even on the go. Bounce partners with local shops in cities throughout Germany to provide the most convenient locations. It’s easily the best option for luggage storage Dusseldorf has available!

How to get to the city from Flughafen Düsseldorf

Train

In typical German fashion, Flughafen Düsseldorf is remarkably well-connected with the highly efficient public transportation network. Flughafen Düsseldorf has two train stops connecting the airport with the primary railway stations (S-Bahns) and inner city express trains (ICEs).

Düsseldorf’s main train station, the Hauptbahnhof, is only a 15-minute train ride via the S11 Train directly to the main terminal building (Düsseldorf Flughafen S). This is the most common way commuters and travelers get to and from the airport. From other locations, you can take a variety of trains to the Düsseldorf Flughafen Train Station on the east side of the airport and hop on the SkyTrain to the main terminal, which only adds a minute or two. These train rides are highly affordable at only $6 per ride.

Buses

Dozens of bus connections stop at the main arrivals hall. The #721 bus arrives from central Düsseldorf (Hauptbahnhof) and is the most common connection. There are also special bus lines running from nearby cities like Essen and Duisburg directly to Düsseldorf Airport, which is key for business travelers.

Taxi

Unless you’re traveling for business from an out-of-the-way destination, it likely won’t be worth the expense to get a taxi to get to or from the airport. Fares rack up quickly, and the average ride costs between $50 and $60.

Rideshare

As in other cities in Germany, Uber and Lyft are commonly used in Düsseldorf and can be a convenient way to get directly to a hotel or attraction. This is by no means the most affordable option, as these rides tend to cost about $60 on average. They’ll also only save you a few minutes at best, given how quickly you can reach the city center via the S1 Train.

Things to do near Flughafen Düsseldorf

Shop around the Königsallee

If you’re a little tired of all the historic city centers and their cobbled streets, then you’ll want to head to “the Kö.” The Königsallee is the cultural heart of Düsseldorf, especially if you’re a younger local. This area is known for its gorgeous tree-lined canal that is fed from the Düssel River (which feeds the Rhine). The leafy park surrounding the canal is known for its striking, modern sightlines, and upscale buildings. Speaking of upscale, the best shopping in Düsseldorf is found around the Königsallee and surrounding streets. It’s fairly easy to get to, being only a 15-minute walk from Dusseldorf Hauptbahnhof and an even shorter trek to Old Town.

Enjoy a bier (or two) in Düsseldorf’s Altstadt

Old Town has the reputation for being the “longest bar in the world” owing to its extremely high concentration of pubs, nightclubs, beer halls, and breweries. While the nightlife scene doesn’t enjoy the world-famous reputation of Berlin’s clubs or Munich’s beer gardens, Düsseldorf brings its own charm with the historic breweries churning out their unique beer.

Altbier brings a touch of flavor you won’t find in any other city in Germany. While the well-made lagers of Munich are delicious, the smokiness of an altbier is something truly unforgettable. It’s slightly stronger but incredibly drinkable, so buyer beware. Along with the pubs the local breweries operate, you’ll also find plenty of impeccable restaurants to soak up the beer with schnitzel and encased meats of every sort.

Schloss Benrath

While it’s situated south of Altstadt, no history buff’s trip through Düsseldorf is complete without a stop at this Baroque masterpiece. Schloss Benrath is a wonderful landmark-turned-museum featuring incredible gardens and an art museum in one of its wings. With a striking pink and white facade befitting a Wes Anderson movie, this beautiful 18th-century pleasure palace is one of the most photogenic places in Düsseldorf, and the interior certainly doesn’t disappoint.

You can take a guided tour detailing the history of the palace’s construction and the life of the German nobleman who built it. While its consideration for a UNESCO World Heritage designation has only begun, this is a vital part of the city’s history and a worthwhile stop.

Schloss Benrath bag policy

All luggage and larger personal items must be kept in the cloakroom. These are highly limited in terms of security, as they’re more cubbies than secured lockers. Schloss Benrath is situated outside the city center and it takes about 25 minutes to get here from Hauptbahnhof via the S6 train, so your best bet is to use any of the Bounce luggage storage facilities in the city and drop off the bags there before heading out to the palace.
