Store Your Luggage Around Kraków With Bounce

Kraków is one of the largest and oldest cities in Poland and is found in the southern section of the country on the Vistula River. Evidence shows that settlers have lived in the area since the seventh century, beginning with the Slavonic tribe of Wiślanie. The city was the capital of Poland until 1596 when King Sigismund III Vasa changed it to Warsaw. You can see all kinds of stunning architectural beauty in and around the city from art nouveau to Renaissance, Gothic, and Romanesque.

Even though Kraków is not the capital anymore, it is considered the cultural capital where you can find over 50 museums, memorials, and galleries. The city is a major tourist attraction for over 13 million people a year. Some of the major attractions include St. Mary’s Basilica, Wawel Castle, Zygmunt Bell, and St. Florian’s Gate. Some natural attractions include the Ojców National Park, Tatra Mountains, and Wieliczka salt mine.

The weather in Kraków can be chilly with an average low temperature of 40 and the average high only reaching 55 degrees. Summertime temperatures rarely get higher than 76 degrees, so you don’t have to worry about getting overheated here. But if you come during the winter, bundle up because the low temperatures are in the 20s.

Kraków City Guide

Top Things to Do

Kraków is a beautiful city with a wide variety of places to visit and things to do. Whether you want to learn the history of the city at some of the museums or enjoy some outdoor sports or activities at one of the parks, you will find it all in Kraków. You can see thousands of beautiful flowers and statues in Planty Park, climb the Kościuszko Mound where a Polish national hero is buried, or check out the dragon in the Dragon’s Den Cave.

Museums

Because the city is a cultural center of Europe, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that they have more than 50 museums to explore. Whether you want to learn more about nature, culture, science, art, or anything else, there is at least one museum for you in Kraków.

  • Kraków Ethnographic Museum: On Piekarska Street in the Kazimierz District, this large museum will give you an education about all the culturally folksy traditions in Europe and Poland. From crafting in the Tatra Mountains to tools and workshops, you will find thousands of items to see. The exhibition looks at four perspectives.
  • Cat Museum: If you like cats, head over to the Cat Museum on Floriańska Street in the middle of the city. Apparently, a couple who really love felines decided to show off their collection of cat-related items. They have thousands of items from knick-knacks to paintings, snow globes, and pillows as well as trinkets, jewelry, and kitchen items. Their cat, Nataliya, is the only live cat on the property, and she considers it her home.
  • Museum of Pharmacy: Also on Floriańska Street, the pharmacy museum is located in the Jagiellonian University Medical School. It may not sound so interesting, but it is really unique, with over 22,000 items from the 19th century. Old medical books, mortars, stoneware, and glassware, as well as lab equipment and instruments, line the shelves. You can even find vials of old mummy powder.

Shopping

Finding the perfect souvenir for those loved ones back home can be frustrating when you don’t know where to go. You may also have a hard time figuring out where to go for other needs like clothing, shoes, or today’s newspaper. Kraków has a little bit of everything in some places and a lot of everything in others.

  • Souvenirs: If you want a large collection of souvenirs, you will find a plethora of places in Kraków. The best place for mass-produced souvenirs is Kraków’s Souvenirs on Floriańska, where they have thousands of items such as keychains, mugs, and other typical souvenir items. In fact, there are several souvenir shops on this street so you can visit them all.
  • Galeria Kazimierz: For one-stop-shopping with over 160 shops, a theatre, kid’s play area, and restaurants, head to Podgórska Street in Eastern Kraków. They have a vast variety of shops from Adventure Sports to Zara. Both local and international names can be found here like Sephora, Guess, Lee, and Gino Rossi.
  • Asortyment Shop: On Bożego Ciała in Central Kraków, the Asortyment Shop has exactly what the name means, an assortment of items. But the great thing about this shop is that all the products are made in Poland. See handmade ceramics and pottery items like plates, bowls, and mugs as well as sugar bowls, and tea pots.

Dining

Polish cuisine is mostly comfort foods like the pierogi, or dumpling, which is the national dish in Poland. Another favorite is Bigos, or Hunter’s stew. This is a meal of sauerkraut, vegetables, and some type of meat. Bagels and sour soup are also popular in Kraków.

  • Local Cuisine: For the best places to eat the local cuisine, you have to go where the locals go. Stylowa in the Nowa Huta District is where you can get the most authentic Polish food. They have six types of dumplings as well as American foods like steaks, burgers, and fries. Another great place is Pod Wawelem-Kompania Kuflow on Gertrudy, where you can get all kinds of Polish cuisine like chopped steak, schnitzel, and pork knuckles.
  • Ed Red: If you are looking for a ribeye or T-bone steak, Ed Red can grill the best. They also have beef cheeks, free-range chicken, and wild boar. Their specialty is dry seasoned steaks that are aged in beef fat for 30 days before cooking. Located on Sławkowska in Old Town, this locally owned establishment is a great place for a special meal or when you are just hungry for an excellent steak. They also offer burgers, fries, and salads, as well as chocolate mousse and fine wines.
  • Pizza: For some great Italian food such as pizza, pasta, and salads, you won’t have to look very far. Apparently, pizza is a favorite in Kraków because they have a lot of pizzerias in town. Pizza Garden on Rakowicka is rated five stars and is a fave in the city, so you may have to wait for a seat. Pizzatopia on Szewska comes in second but has a wider variety of pizza toppings and other dishes. Another favorite for pizza, Italiano Pizza & Pasta can be found on Sienna in a quaint little eatery.
