About Batu Caves

Long ago, a man named K. Thamboosamy Pillai discovered a massive limestone cave system in Malaysia. Pillai didn’t know that the system was millions of years old. However, he believed that the caves held great significance to the Hindu religion. Thus, Pillai used his resources and influence to dedicate this cave system to the gods and goddesses of Hindu cosmology. Many others quickly rallied to Pillai’s cause. Through their combined efforts, the Batu Caves became a key place of worship and reverence for anyone who follows the Hindu faith.

It’s been centuries since K. Thamboosamy Pillai’s discovery, and the Batu Caves remain as significant as ever. Every year, numerous festivals take place in and around the Batu Caves. One of these festivals is Thaipusam, an event that starts during January or February full moons and unfolds over the course of three days.
