About Ljubljana

Traveling to central Europe? Don’t miss out on the picturesque country of Slovenia. Lying on the edge of the Balkan Peninsula, Slovenia boasts stunning landscapes, world-class architecture, dreamy countryside, and many cultural attractions.

The capital of Slovenia is Ljubljana, a hidden gem becoming increasingly popular amongst travelers. The city is located in central Slovenia, right at the intersection of the four main roads that cross the country. Slovenia has over 2 million people, and about 289,000 reside in Ljubljana.

Despite its small population, the city is thriving in every aspect. Ljubljana is known for its natural beauty, so you’ll likely want to spend time wandering the streets or sitting by the river. The city has a buzzing foodie scene with many cafes, restaurants, and bars worth checking out. And with several historical sites, the iconic Central Market, fascinating museums, architecture, and various parks, such as Tivoli Park, you certainly won’t run out of ways to fill your days.

When wandering the streets of Ljubljana, keep an eye out for dragons. The dragon is the city's official symbol, and you’ll find it on the coat of arms and in different spots around town. Make the most of your visit by dropping off heavy luggage at one of our left luggage facilities in the city. Top things to do in Ljubljana

As the capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana is a perfect introduction to the country. Located on the intersection of the four main roads covering Slovenia, it’s also a great base if you’re looking to get out of the city and explore other regions. Whether you’re looking to do some restaurant and bar hopping, wander through markets, visit the main tourist sites, or simply relax with a picnic, Ljubljana is a worthwhile inclusion on your European itinerary.

Attractions and activities in Ljubljana

Are you excited about the idea of visiting Ljubljana? You should be. This city has so much to offer travelers, and given that it’s still somewhat off the beaten track, it’s unlikely you’ll be battling the crowds you might face in Athens, Berlin, or other major European cities.

To help you plan your itinerary and enjoy Ljubljana to the fullest, here are some “must-see, must-do” attractions and activities:

Preseren Square

A cobblestone paved and pedestrianized square in the heart of Ljubljana’s Old Town, this public area is always teeming with life. Named after the famous Slovenian poet France Preseren, this lively square is often the location of different city events and is worth a wander just for the people watching. Take in the views of the Triple Bridge, Dragon Bridge, Ljubljenica River and the historic buildings, or sit at a cafe and observe the crowds passing by.

Want to explore the square and learn all about it from a guide? Free walking tours are available from some of the tourist offices at the edge of the square.

Triple Bridge

The picturesque Triple Bridge dates back to 1842. Composed of three bridges across the Ljubljanica River, it’s one of the most iconic monuments in the city. The bridge connects the medieval town of Ljubljana with the modern part.

Get a picture of the beautiful bridge that turns magical when lit up at night, then go for a stroll along the river to admire the view and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Remember to drop off any bags or backpacks before you visit the historic town and the Triple Bridge.

Ljubljana Castle

One of the most popular sites in the city, the medieval Ljubljana Castle sits above the city and can be reached by a designated tourist train. The main courtyard has a cafe, restaurant, galleries and even a nightclub, so make sure you allocate enough time to enjoy the site and all it has to offer.

Ljubljana Castle bag policy

Visitors to the museum can use a small locker to stow items at the entrance to the Museum of Puppetry, although they may be full at peak times. Store your belongings with us near the castle. We can take luggage of any size, storing it for as long as you need.

Tivoli Park

When you need to stretch your legs from a day of sightseeing, you’ll find this place to be just right. A green oasis in the heart of the city, Tivoli Park is one of the largest parks in Ljubljana. Here, people come to rest, hike, explore, run, cycle and more.

Don’t make the mistake of bringing heavy shopping bags or large backpacks to this beautiful park. Store your luggage at one of the luggage storage locations nearby and enjoy the park hands-free. But you can pack your lunch basket and put your comfy shoes on, as you might spend an entire day in this lovely park.

Looking to explore more parks in Ljubljana? Try Miklošičev Park and Šmartinski park.

Shopping in Ljubljana

Art Market and Antique Flea Market

If you’re in Ljubljana during summer,  check out the stalls along the Ljubljanica River every Saturday and Sunday. Here, you can find treasures with historical and collector value, from art paintings and vintage jewelry to unique ceramics and fun accessories. When your arms are full of heavy shopping bags, find the nearest luggage storage location and lighten your load to grab lunch and coffee.

Galerija Emporium

Are you searching for luxury designer brands in Ljubljana? Located near Preseren Square is the Emporium Gallery, a luxury department store set in an Art Nouveau palace from 1903. The Gallery stretches across five levels, offering anything from fashion and footwear to electronics, toys, and accessories. Brands you’ll find include Kenzo, Roberto Cavalli, Calvin Klein, and more. The entire second floor is dedicated to stores selling fashion from Slovenian designers.

BTC City Ljubljana

With over 500 stores, this is the largest mall in Ljubljana, and it's ideal to shop here when the weather could be better. The mall is located further away from the city center, and its convenient location and amenities allow you to spend the entire day here without leaving for lunch, coffee and entertainment.

When you’re tired of shopping you can relax with a movie at the cinema, or win prizes at the casino. Kids and kids at heart will enjoy the water park and many other activities that will fill every hour of your day. Need to store luggage somewhere for a few hours? Find the nearest luggage storage and enjoy the mall without the burden of baggage.

Top restaurants in Ljubljana

JB Restaurant

If your idea of fine dining in Ljubljana involves elegant design and an open kitchen where you can watch your food being prepared, then this is the place to go. Located in downtown Ljubljana, this fine dining establishment serves traditional Slovenian cuisine. It’s the perfect spot for a family dinner, a celebration, or a business lunch.

Wine lovers can enjoy the extensive wine list from both Slovenian and international wineries. A must-try is the venison with blackberry sauce and celeriac puree and their famous JB homemade ravioli with cottage cheese and pistachio.

TaBar

This trendy tapas restaurant is just a short distance from Preseren Square. It’s a wonderful spot for a fun night out with friends or a romantic date. Delicious and innovative plates are what you get at this Michelin-starred restaurant, with an open kitchen, too. Go for the 6-course menu and pair it with some of the best Slovenian wines. Book a table in advance as this is one of the most popular places in town.

Klobasarna

If you’re looking for a place to grab a quick bite while exploring the city center, head down to this fast-food restaurant for simple yet delicious food. This place serves traditional Slovenian sausages in a bun with seasonal vegetables and toppings. If you don’t like sausages, go with side dishes like potato salad or sauerkraut.

Remember to store your luggage before you dine, as most restaurants don’t have storage lockers. Book on the Bounce platform to reserve a spot in advance and then stop to dine.

Transit options in Ljubljana

Getting around Ljubljana is easy, especially if you base yourself in the city center. In fact, you’ll probably spend a lot of time getting around on foot as this is one of the best ways to get a feel for the city. You can also choose to use these transport options:

Bike

One of the best ways to get around Ljubljana is by bike. Most hotels offer free bike rentals, but you can also use either the city's BicikeLJ bicycle-sharing system or the Ljubljana Bike Project. With the first, you can ride a bike for free for the first hour and pay €1 to €4 for additional hours. If you return the bike before the hour expires and wait for five minutes before renting again, you end up riding for free as long as the rides are less than an hour.

With the second bike rental, you pay €2 for 2 hours and €8 for additional hours. Both options are affordable, making cycling one of the best and cheapest transit options in the city.

If you need to store your bike for a few hours, we can help. Our left luggage facilities can be found all across Ljubljana, and unlike city or railway station lockers, we have no restrictions on the luggage you want to store. Contact our customer support team, and they’ll direct you to a location to match your requirements.

Bus

While there’s no need to use the bus to get around Ljubljana, taking the bus may be useful when venturing outside the city, exploring the suburbs, or going to the airport. Ljubljana’s bus network operates 42 bus lines that cover the city and suburbs.

To ride the bus in Ljubljana, you’ll need to purchase an Urbana card, which you can find for €2 at any LPP ticket office, post offices, some kiosks, and information centers. An hour and a half ride on the bus costs anywhere from €1.20 to €2.50, depending on the zone. A one-way ticket to the airport costs around €4.

Taxi

Much like in other European cities, taxis are readily available in Ljubljana and the airport, and they’re the most convenient way to get around the city. However, they’re also the priciest. Expect to pay anywhere from €20 to €40 from the city center to the airport or vice versa.
