About Luton

Luton is a town in Bedfordshire, England. With a population of over 200,000 people, Luton is one of the largest towns in the UK. Luton is positioned along the River Lea about 30 miles north of London, making it a popular area for commuters looking to stay out of the capital. Luton is well-known for its airport, which serves over 15 million passengers every year and offers flights to dozens of destinations around the world.

The Saxons founded Luton in the 6th century and named the village Lea due to its position along the river. Over the 400 years, Lea quickly grew into a town of a few hundred people. A successful farming town, medieval Luton was mentioned in the Domesday Book under the name 'Loitone.' By the 19th century, Luton became a center for the hat-making industry and a market town. Luton's population increased rapidly after World War I, and with the construction of Luton Airport in the 1930s. Today, Luton is a vibrant commuter town and major transport hub, offering international flights and easy access to London.

  • Stockwood Discovery: One of the best ways to learn about Luton and Bedfordshire's history is at the Stockwood Discovery Centre. This free museum hosts an array of exhibits from rural crafts to archeological finds to Luton's recent industrial history. One of the highlights from the museum is the Mossman Carriage Collection. There are over 50 horse-drawn carriages in the collection, making it the largest of its kind in the UK.
Another highlight from the museum's collection is The Luton Guild Book, an account of membership to the Guild of the Holy Trinity Luton dating back to the 15th century. After taking a tour of the museum's collection, head to the beautiful traditional English gardens for a stroll, or stop by the onsite cafe for afternoon tea. You won't want to drag your bags around this sizable museum, so swing by a Luton luggage storage service before visiting.

During your visit to ZSL Whipsnade Zoo, you'll find dozens of rare and endangered species on display, including red pandas, Amur tigers, and white rhinos. If you’re looking for a slightly different experience, hop in your car and take a drive through Whipsnade's safari and come up close to deer, yaks, and camels. You can't bring large bags into the zoo with you, so check in at a luggage storage service in Luton before taking a tour.
  • Wardown House, Museum and Gallery - Bedfordshire is famous for its lace and hat-making industry, and you can learn all about it at the Wardown House, Museum and Gallery. A large Victorian manor house, Wardown House, has been transformed back into a Victorian family home, as it would've looked in the 19th century. Wardown House is home to many intriguing artifacts. One notable artifact that was once in the collection is the Wenlock Jug, which dates back to the 15th century and is one of the finest examples of medieval bronze working in the UK. Once you're once perusing the museum's collection, stop by the Dining Room Café for a snack overlooking Wardown Park.
