About Makati

Founded in the late 1600s, Makati is in the middle of Manila, known for its tourism, restaurants, and shopping. It was originally known as San Pedro de Makati but the name was shortened in 1930. The city is now the financial center of the Philippines. With a population of over 582,000, the population doubles during peak season, with visitors coming from all over the world.

With a tropical climate, the temperature rarely dips lower than 70 degrees, making outdoor activities very popular. There are dozens of community and city parks with the most popular being Salcedo Park, Legaspi Park, Ayala Triangle Park, and Greenbelt Park. Greenbelt has a duck pond as well as a chapel, green spaces, and a stream meandering through it to enjoy.

There are two major shopping centers in Makati, including the Ayala Center on Legazpi Street and the SM Megamall on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA). You’ll also find street markets just about everywhere. Don't miss the large Market Market Shopping Center. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding souvenirs for everyone on your list here, and if you get hungry, you’ll have no problem finding a place to fuel up.

Fun Fact: Makati was ignored and called a worthless swamp area in 1571 by Juan Miguel de Legazpi, the Spanish conquistador.
