About Graceland

Graceland is a mansion within the 13.8-acre estate in Memphis, Tennessee and was formerly owned by the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. Situated along the aptly named Elvis Presley Boulevard in Whitehaven, just a few miles south of downtown Memphis, the mansion has been converted into a tourist attraction and is the ultimate pilgrimage for music lovers and die-hard fans of the King. Elvis bought the property in 1957, when he was aged 22, and lived here for most of his life until his death, when he was found lifeless in the bathroom of Graceland on August 16, 1977.

On November 7, 1991, the estate was included in the National Register of Historic Places and eventually declared a National Historic Landmark on March 27, 2006. The estate was then transformed into a museum and entertainment complex dedicated to the King’s life and opened to the public in 1982. As one of Memphis’ most popular tourist destinations, it’s no surprise that there are numerous tours of Graceland available to visitors. Tour guests can explore his former home and the different mementos and memorabilia that tell the life of Elvis – from his iconic Jungle room where he and his band frequently recorded songs to more personal items such as his costumes, Priscilla’s wedding dress and Lisa Marie’s childhood toys.

Fun fact: Graceland is the second-most visited home in the entire country, with more than 600,000 visitors per year, second only to the White House.

Things to do in Graceland

Graceland is one of the most frequented sites in all of Memphis because of its historic background and relation to the iconic Elvis Presley. While the estate itself is enough to keep you satisfied, there are plenty of other points of interest near Graceland that are worth doing, including the following.

  • Visit the Elvis Presley Automobile Museum within the estate, where you will find some of Elvis’ vehicles, including his famous pink Cadillac
  • Check out some important mementos from famous musicians at the Blues Hall of Fame
  • Observe over 3,000 different animals and creatures at the Memphis Zoo
  • Check out the decades-long duck march tradition at the historic Peabody Hotel

King, and Alberta Hunter started their careers.

Luggage Storage near Sun Studio

Located at 706 Union Avenue, the Sun Studio is a recording facility owned by Sam Phillips and is famous for being the “birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Established in 1950, the studio single-handedly launched the music careers of some of America’s legendary musicians such as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and the King himself, Elvis Presley. When Elvis recorded here in 1954, he became an instant hit, and the Sun Studio became one of the world’s most prominent recording studios.

At present, the studio has been converted into a museum where guests can tour the different recording rooms, listen to some classic vinyl music and see some of the iconic memorabilia such as the first microphone that Elvis used to record. Since most tours of Sun Studio last at least 45 minutes, it’s best to leave your luggage somewhere safe. Open the Bounce app, find the nearest location, and drop off your items there.

The museum is home to over 200 historic artifacts and a collection of interactive media that gives guests a peek into the country’s history. Another interesting fact about the museum is that it is currently housed in the former Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968.

If you’re planning to visit the museum, note that oversized bags are not allowed inside the venue and must be checked in with the security. Avoid any hassle during your visit by leaving your things at a Bounce location near the area.
