About Namba

Osaka is a city located in the Kansai region of Japan and is one of the country’s biggest and most popular cities. The capital city of Kansai, Osaka is rich in culture and houses some of Japan’s most famous attractions, making it a prominent holiday destination for both locals and foreigners. Central Osaka is divided into two areas – the downtown area known as Kita (north) and Minami (south). The latter is quite popular for many things, including the district of Namba. It is considered the central district of Minami and is often referred to as the gateway to Osaka.

When you think about Japan, there is a stereotypical image of the country being wacky and bizarre, and Namba is perhaps the best example of this. The district encapsulates the kawaii counterculture that the Land of the Rising Sun is so famous for. The area is a well-known entertainment district with a plethora of restaurants, arcades, bars, nightclubs, landmarks, shopping areas, and pachinko parlors. It is also the site for some of Japan’s most iconic spots and sights. Visiting and exploring the Namba district can be an overwhelming but unforgettable experience and is a definite must-see when in Japan.

Fun fact: Namba is home to several major railway terminals, including Hanshin, JR, Kintetsu, and Nankai.

Often referred to as the center of Namba’s entertainment district, the area is world-renowned for its colorful signs, shops and restaurants, and overall eccentric atmosphere. Some of Osaka’s most iconic visuals, such as the Glico Man and the Kuidaore Taro, can be found here.

The neighborhood dates back to the Edo period and was once a town that centers on kabuki theaters. Today, the art of kabuki is alive and well at the Shochiku-za Theater, located within Dotonbori. Luggage Storage Near Namba Yasaka Shrine

No doubt one of the most engrossing and unique shrines in Japan, the Namba Yasaka Shrine is a must-see when in the area. Believed to have a history of over nine centuries, the shrine is a significant worship place for Shinto followers. This indigenous practice involves the worshipping of nature. Situated just a few minutes away from the Nankai Namba Station, the shrine is easily recognizable because of its distinct giant lion head, which has eyes that light up and a snout that has speakers. According to local folklore, the mouth of the lion is said to bring fortune to those who visit. There is also an annual event held in January at the shrine, where a tug-of-war style competition occurs.
